Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako are making a three-day state visit to the Netherlands. On the evening of June 18, 2026, Emperor Naruhito of Japan and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. During the guided tour, the Emperor and Queen saw, among other things, a 17th-century Japanese lacquer chest.

Landscapes, a hunting scene, and a palace scene from The Tale of Genji—a classic work of Japanese literature from the early 11th century—were depicted down to the smallest detail. The Emperor and Queen Máxima also toured the Gallery of Honour and viewed The Night Watch, painted by the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn.

  1. The Japanese emperor is very short. It would have been very considerate of Q Maxima if she had worn lower heels. Also she is overdressed for a daytime visit to the museum.

Two inch heels would not have made a difference. MR

The Emperor has always been short. I'm pretty sure he's used to it and doesn't expect other people to compensate.

    3. I don't understand this kind of reasoning. I do believe the emperor is man enough not to feel any lesser because of his height, and why would Maxima have to excuse herself because she's a tall woman? My cousin is very tall and in her teens she would slouch in order to try to "blend in" with the rest of us that were shorter. But I'm happy to say it was short lived and she walks with a straight back happy with her height now. There's no human value in our stature since there's mighty little we can do about it. So nobody needs to make any accomodation in regards to that.

In the introduction text under the 1st photo is written that they made this visit "on the evening of the18th June". Better read everything carefully before writing down your comment.

Totally agree, my thoughts also. See had to wear lower heels. The emperor is short but Maxima looks massive. Ellen

    6. The caption says "On the evening of June 18, 2026," so this was not a daytime visit. Even if she wore flats, QM would be much taller that the Emperor. Let's assume his masculine pride is strong enough to withstand a woman standing taller than he as his wife consistently does. If he had a problem with it, the Empress would wear flats.

She is the Queen of her country, dear MM. she is not overdressed and she is not inconsiderate. She is tall, that’s fact, he is short, that’s fact. And they are friends and by all accounts, hold great respect for one another.

Wear shorter heels, and next day, the boulevard makes a laughing stock of *both* of them. Ridiculous idea. The Emperor is shorter than any European he visits or he is visited by. Really, sometimes I wonder why people think it is a good idea to meet someone halfway who never ever asked to be met ... :-)

I think the dress is beautiful and adapted to the situation, but lower heels would have bee more polite.

      What a stupid comment,
I see a lot of Japanese passengers every day, some of them are (very) tall, some are pretty short.
Do you think that every time the Emperor meets with tall Japanese people, they have to be" considerate" enough as to shrink, slouch or even disappear?
      Please!!

Again with high heels, she should have been more considerate of her guests height, instead of wearing plastic sky high heels. Nice outfit he is wearing.

She was considerate. That’s why she dressed with elegance and accompanied them to the museum last night.

Here’s a Natan that works really well. That museum is absolutely fabulous; and it looks as if they may have had a private evening viewing.

    @ MM 22:41:

  6. Maxima looks beautiful, very regal and elegant. Love the color. She has style and panache to wear this outfit beautifully and she does. She has such confidence.

The dress, the accessories and the woman. She’s the queen, hence regal by definition, aside from her beautiful regal posture and outfit.

You agree with MM who is wrong about the moment the visit took place ? or are it just the high heels that bother you. Well among friends if you are commoners or kings or emperors such a stupid thing like a pair of shoes doesn't make any difference. They know who and what they are. Queen Maxima took care of the Empress when she had a difficult time in her life, Empress Masako stayed incognito in The Netherlands to rest. If someone is doing this for you when you have a difficult time you won't forget this. The Emperor's parents are still alive and they are very tiny too. When they visited Europe decades ago or when a king and queen visited them in Japan, I never heard people saying they had problems with the high heels of European queens. These days however people are way too quickly with their grieves, so quickly that they don't read what other people who know more than them have already written !

To wear low heeled shoes would be an admission that body height matters. Some of you seem to think this.

I'm short and married to a Dutch family, I never expected none, family or co-workers to adjust to my height by not using heels, I've never thought about using platforms trying to compensate my height.
She is a tall lady (not even that tall for Dutch standards) she should wear her outfit as she pleases.
And I think she looks lovely!

Luna, she is 1.80, I know because that is my lengte also. For the younger generation this is not exceptionele anymore, but for hers ( and. mine) it is, even in the Netherlands!

Actually, I think the emperor and the queen look very sweet together, one can tell by looking at their happy smiles, the difference in size looks completely natural, somehow they both move my heart.

This dress suits the queen well, the emperor’s suit is a good fit. Not usually a Natan fan but this one works

All who are shrieking about HM Q Maxima’s heels make me laugh. HIM Empress Masako is taller than her husband, and she wears heels. Why no hue and cry over her footwear?
