Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako are making a three-day state visit to the Netherlands. On the evening of June 18, 2026, Emperor Naruhito of Japan and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. During the guided tour, the Emperor and Queen saw, among other things, a 17th-century Japanese lacquer chest.

Landscapes, a hunting scene, and a palace scene from The Tale of Genji—a classic work of Japanese literature from the early 11th century—were depicted down to the smallest detail. The Emperor and Queen Máxima also toured the Gallery of Honour and viewed The Night Watch, painted by the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn.

  1. The Japanese emperor is very short. It would have been very considerate of Q Maxima if she had worn lower heels. Also she is overdressed for a daytime visit to the museum.

Lovely outfit on Maxima. The colour and the style suit her so well.
