On June 25, 2026, Princess Aiko of Japan visited an exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Japanese fashion designer Hanae Mori at the National Art Center. The exhibition features approximately 400 works by the designer, including haute couture dresses and archival materials. Hanae Mori is also known for designing Empress Masako’s wedding dress. For the exhibition visit, Princess Aiko wore one of her mother’s outfits.
Hanae Mori (8 January 1926 – 11 August 2022) was a Japanese fashion designer. She was one of only two Japanese women to present her collections on the runways of Paris and New York, and the first Asian woman to be officially recognised as a haute couture house by the Fédération française de la couture in France.
For her visit to the exhibition, Princess Aiko wore a yellow outfit previously worn by Empress Masako. The outfit was designed by Hanae Mori and had originally been worn during a visit to a centre for people with disabilities in Nanao, Ishikawa Prefecture, on 26 September 1994.

Beautiful outfit that fits the prinsess a lot better than many others she has worn. Lovely colour and I love the slim cut of the jacket.. Timeless design.
ReplyDeleteWish I could see the Hanae Mori exhibition
@Ladyofthemanor Yes, I too like the outfit for the same reasons as you. I also like the collar and neck area shape and cut.The overall look is certainly vintage, and it's nice to see that contemporary well known Japanese designers once dressed the JIF. You don't often publicly hear of that now. I also like that P.Aiko wore something from her mothers closet, even though this was a special case for doing so.

This suit looks so good on HIH P Aiko! Hard to believe it was her mother’s; absolutely love that the princess can wear it. Yellow seems to be the color of this season so this fits right in. P. Aiko is really coming into her own fashion wise (I get the irony of me saying that while she’s wearing her mother’s clothes!) in the last several months. I’m looking forward to see her evolving tastes.
ReplyDeleteDesigned and worn (by Masako) over 30 years ago and instead of "aging well", it does not age at all! This is how (sustainable) fashion should be, without all those exaggerated features crying "look at me, I am the latest fashion fade". Isn't it lovely!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to princess Aiko for wearing it.
DeleteThis suit fits nicely and a good colour for her. She would look lovely in some of the exhibited dresses. It would be a nice modern twist for her to wear.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! this suit was well kept after all these years!
ReplyDeleteLignes parfaites de cet ensemble dont la couleur lui va à ravir ; bon choix que les boucles d'oreilles ainsi qu'un délicat médaillon monté sur une chaîne !

What a great way to honour that Japanese fashion designer. Princess Aiko looks very, very good in that Hanae Mori ensemble once designed for her mother, the empress (back then crown princess).
ReplyDeleteComing back to add: I just noticed how cute (counts as handsome here) then Crown Prince Naruhito looks in the pictures from back in the day.
DeleteI like her hair curls at the back
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteThe tailoring of this vintage Moi oufit is exquisite, although I find the shoes
ReplyDeletea bit uninspiring. What a wonderful surprise to have brought it to life again, this is rewearing at its best, and I hope to see it again very soon.

Aiko's mother's suit looks great on her. Princesses in many royal families wear their mother's dresses. They should also change Aiko's ugly shoes, which look bad on her feet.
ReplyDeleteAbout those "ugly" shoes: some decades ago, the older generation wore this kind of high heels you call "ugly" because the fashion changed. By the way, they were more comfortable in every respect than today's high heels with their feet deforming front parts. The Japanese royals keep wearing this type of shoes, yes - but why call them ugly? Why do you think the style your eyes are used to are "better"? Why not be a bit more thought- and respectful?
DeleteYes, her hair looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful outfit on Princess Aiko — she looks wonderfully put together and utterly charming ❤️. (I didn’t know this suit had been Empress Masako’s; that makes it even more wonderful.). I quite like the plain classic pumps the Japanese royal ladies tend to favor; they let the principle garments take center stage while often complementing them color-wise.
ReplyDeleteWow! This fits perfectly. Up close its beautifully crafted, designed and looks gorgeous. It has some very interesting features up close. Perfectly placed bow, nice size, buttons perfectly placed. This ensemble is faultless. The two toned color is sublime, very pretty and feminine. The skirt of the outfit is the perfect length. I have to confess I love the gloves in her hands, and the gorgeous bag she is carrying. Her necklace up close, beautiful, the gold chain is shorter and sits beautifully, the small pearl pendant is tasteful and a lovely size. The pearl earrings are the perfect finishing touch.
ReplyDeleteWow that is a valuable rewear. Compared to her contemporary clothes she looks very much better in her mother's jacket, skirt and blouse and the light yellow is a fashionable color. Yes, it is true fashion is coming back sooner or later. Good quality and a good style will never go out of fashion.
