Are my eyes deceiving me or is Mathilda's slip/ petticoat
too short for such a somber occasion?.

Perhaps one should mention it was a schoolbus. There were 4 victims : 2 children, the chauffeur and a young woman responsable for guiding the children. There were also 5 seriously injured people.
Queen Mathilde wore a beautiful and descent navy pleated dress by Emporio Armani. Black shoes and a black clutch. Despite the heat they were present again after a busy week hosting the Emperor and Empress of Japan. After the ceremony the king and queen met with the parents of the deceased children, the parents of the injured victims, the emergency services like the Red Cross and other rescue teams.

No one could accuse the couple of not being present. After a week of hosting a state visit, they’re back on duty. QM looks appropriate for such a solemn occasion. I can’t imagine it being anything other than heartbreaking to have to see and hear the pain of loss the parents feel. Being royal isn’t always tiaras and banquets,as this couple have shown us.

  7. A very reverent occasion and equally dressed as such. I'm glad to see her under petticoat is the same length as the dress. She looks dignified and graceful.

I think the skirt of the dress has a lining. Most ladies these days are not wearing petticoats anymore.

Isn't the dress a tad to big (size).

Of course royals know what to wear in a grave ceremony like this, protocol governs mourning dress. What I find far more unusual and very symbolic is that the royal couple is HOLDING HANDS.

@09:14- that is not unusual for this couple, they invariably hold hands or link arms.

Not a good neckline for her and all the pleats are giving the old lady vibes.
