She used to dress proper back in the days, I wonder what happened!
Bold colours are more appropriate for official events such as these!

She is dressing “proper” (or “properly” as we who speak properly like to say). She has on a dress and shoes, and has styled her hair very beautifully. Just because you don’t like the clothes doesn’t mean they’re not “proper”!

I do not like the style of the dress nor the color. The sleeves are making the dress matronly. And again she is wearing espadrilles, inside a building where the floor is even and flat, I suppose.

@matronly: What does it mean, does this word cover everything that is disliked? - The aforementioned sleeves are not "matronly", they are sloppy, as is befitting for the quite casual style of this dress which is fine for some more casual occasions. But sure not for this one.

I’ll object not to your opinion, which you are free to have, no problem. But by the derogatory use of “matronly”. Is there another adjective you could use there?

Quelle surprise, a long, fussy dress in a small all-over print (and another pair of espadrilles). This outfit is common in the English countryside, but I’m not sure it makes sense elsewhere.

It’s a very popular style right now in European summer, so no problem with the choice.

I wonder where in Europe women are wearing such dresses ? I do not see it in my country and since there are a lot of people of other European countries who are working or living temporary in my country I can see a variety of dress styles, but I never see women wearing the type of dresses the Duchess is wearing.

@20:41, Please don't underestimate European women :-)) . But even if you were right (what you are not): frequency would not mean attractiveness. I often criticise people who overuse the word "matronly", because it is ageism - in this case I am almost at the point to use it. Maybe because of the unhappy colours on it.

She looks very nice. I feel that she dresses for the English country side. Prince Edward also dress like a country gentleman most of the time, today no double breasted jacket. They wear what they feel comfortable in, including shoes. What I do like is the way her hair is tied back, away from her face yet still leaving some length.Princess Victoria of Sweden should try this technique, I think her hair would work well like this.

CP Victoria's hair is certainly not worser than Sophie's. CP Victoria has often beautiful updo's. Only when she is probably doing it herself and in a hurry her curly hair which is difficult to treat, looks sometimes a bit wild. Besides CP Victoria's hair is much thicker than Sophie's. Absolutely no comparison possible. Where come these advices from that other European royal ladies should copy the British ? Personally I do not think that other European queen's and princesses are dressed less better and have less better hairstyles than the British on the contrary.

I think the espadrilles are the most comfortable for her. It's a heel without being a heel. When most women reach a certain age the foot arch just won't let you wear cute heels anymore. I think that's what's happening with the Duchess. (I could be wrong.) In turn, espadrilles are not going to work with a proper suit, proper dress, or dresscoast. So here we are. With the exception of Ascot, Rememrance Day, and the like, it's either espadriles or suede boots.

There are always explanations, the simplest being that dearest Sophie has a poor taste for her outfit choices. But fashion blogs are not there to explain away poor outfit choices by whatever comes to mind if someone wants to "defend" the poor choice. Much older women than Sophie found tasteful solutions.

I'm "Anon 21:53" I don't dislike the dress (as others have said) and even the model is wearing it much like Sophie. I think she looks very nice and summery. I just think most people are expecting a little more variety in both dress and shoe.

I don’t see bashing just commenting on what is seen on first glance and whether is well chosen for various reasons, including how it looks.

I don't find her dress and shoes very attractive. There are so many elegantly and chicly dressed royal ladies, some older than Sophie, that I just can't get excited about her clothing choices.

The cut and style is for a younger woman - she needs a new stylist.

Younger woman ? Where I live younger woman are not dressed like old ladies. Even old ladies are dressed younger these days. I also agree with Virginia Dogwood.

  10. I feel this dress suits the Duchess. I like the style of the dress, particularly the skirt of her dress, plenty of swish, and movement, feminine. The only thing I don't like is the pattern of the fabric and colors involved. I love her up style hair.
Special mention of the Duke, he looks really good here, well-groomed and attired. I love his suit and color of his tie. He looks very well put together!
