I don't think that Victoria has to adapt her visitor's own modesty presciptions - in her, Victoria's own country . Or is the Sheikha desired to adapt the fashion rules of the country she visits? No, she is not. And Victoria is even less required to follow the rules of a country and a religion which is not her own. -

Sometimes she simply wears a - sorry to say, but: a disturbingly ugly dress, reminiscent of romantic wallpapers or the textile cover furniture in some palaces, maybe. This is floral overload of the worst kind - for me.

I agree with you. I think none of the European royals have to adapt their clothes to the visitors of another country and they should also wear their own clothes when they go to another country on invitation. Diplomatic dressing is something that must come from both sides. If not, best is that everybody wears their own clothes.
I do not like the colour and flower decoration of the dress either.

I think romantic wallpaper makes a great fabric print. It looks like Wallpaper is a compliment in my book. Victoria looks happy and comfortable.

Completely agree the only word I can fairly use of the dress ( I stress the dress not the beautiful Victoria ) is ugly.

I thought strictly religious Moslima's were not allowed to wear make-up so maybe the Sheika adapted herself in this way to modern western society where women are equal to men and can decide for themselves what to wear like Victoria in het lovely summerdress without having to cover her hair

I would never call another woman’s dress ugly. It can be more or less to my taste. This one I think is just lovely but the lower shade is a lot… if that were lighter the whole dress would be softer, but I still think Victoria looks beautiful. And like others, while I appreciate her thoughtfulness, I think it’s for us when we are visiting other’s lands to adapt to what’s appropriate for them and not vica versa. The only exception for me is if I have people visiting me who are likely very uncomfortable with a lot of my bare skin, I would cover it, but in my way.

I want to like the dress, as it does fit well and nice length. I don’t like the neckline, it is missing something, but with the business of the pattern hard to say what.
The sheikha looks lovely in pale blue and I like how she twisted the scarf end . Two lovely ladies, very classy.

The Saloni dress is pretty but the print is very busy. The colours in it make it even more busier looking. To me, it doesn't suit Victoria and I seem to sense that she may have chosen it because it vaguely resembles an arabic print, and would be a kind and thoughtful consideration to her guest. If this was the case, I commend her for it.
As for Sheika Latifa, I really like the way she has worn the long part of her headscarf in the front, twisted that way. I've never seen a scarf worn like that by a dignitary and it looks very nice.

This Sheikha Latifa I. True to the Dubai ruler's principles. She has two sisters/half-sisters that go by the same name, one of which (Latifa II) has tried to escape Dubai and her father, was caught off the coast of India, brought back forcefully to Dubai, and has not been seen since, except one appearance where she was apparently drugged and presented to someone from the UN. After that, she managed to smuggle a video out of her prison cell. That was the last the world heard of her. Also, another daughter, Sheikha Shamsa, tried to flee before that, and was also caught and imprisoned. The case of Sheikha Latifa II was, btw., the final straw that made Princess Haya (of Jordan, once married to Sheikh Mohammed Al Makhtoum) seek refuge with her two children in London and divorce her husband. Just for additional context.

Thank you for sharing this context. It's unbelievable that there are so many countries in the 21st century where women are oppressed because of religion

Yes. I was following this saga but they've been dissappeared so ... no updates. I hope they're still alive but they are probably very, very unhappy. They are property, not independent human beings.

A very bad excuse for a floral. She blends in with the carpet. A definite MISS.

  7. I think the neckline on the model is different to CP Victoria's neckline.
The dress is very pretty and feminine. It fits well and suits her beautifully, she looks very elegant.

This is a miss for me. Matronly, a pretty fabric for something else, and not flattering. She has always preferred crew necklines but sometimes if the dress is slightly too long or especially old fashioned looking, it all comes together in an unfortunate way.

Can we not use matronly as a derogatory term?

How is matronly derogatory, it is a look, not an insult.

  11. I think the dress is gorgeous. The floral print is arranged in a very flattering and thoughtful way and not overwhelming at all. The colours are very pretty with the contrast of light pink and deeper burgundy. It's a feminine, imaginative and interesting dress. I think Victoria looks fabulous!

I relooked at the photos to see what is making it a miss for me. Perhaps it is the ornate room itself that is competing with the dress. Perhaps because her hair pulled back so slick and absent of the collar as on the model it is too harsh a transition. A nice chunky necklace to add volume would fix it, imo. Otherwise it is a nice fitting dress.

I'm not saying full-on but Victoria could do with a little makeup - a light tented moisturizer, or some light face powder, and a little lip color. She’s a gorgeous woman with a great figure – and her clothes are often very lovely - but over the last couple of years it seems she just doesn’t put much effort into grooming. I can understand not wanting to overly fussy with hair (I’m actually the same way) but put on a little blush and lip stick. Many of you think the dress is a miss but I think her plain hair and face is what's contributing to that. The dress looks great on the model because she also has hair and makeup done!
