Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako are on a two-day state visit to Belgium. On the evening of June 23, 2026, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde hosted a state banquet at the Royal Castle of Laeken in Brussels in honour of the Emperor and Empress. For the occasion, Princess Elisabeth wore the Laurel Wreath Tiara and Diamond Fringe Earrings with the Order of the Chrysanthemum. Princess Eléonore wore a new diamond tiara, which had been sold at auction in 2019 and was made in Belgium by the Brussels jeweller Coosemans. Princess Astrid wore the Savoy-Aosta Diamond Tiara.

For the occasion, Empress Masako wore Princess Chichibu’s Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara and Necklace with the Order of Leopold. Made by Mikimoto around 1928, the tiara features diamond honeysuckle motifs and was created for Princess Chichibu. Queen Mathilde wore the Nine Provinces Tiara and diamond earrings with the Order of the Precious Crown.

Oh gosh everyone looks so well dressed. The men total male elegance, and the ladies so beautiful in their dress.

The ladies all look beautiful. Eleonore’s tiara is very pretty and almost delicate looking; it suits her. I’m not sure what the pattern is at the top of Mathilde’s dress - fans? flowers? - but the dress looks good on her and has a nice fit.

Such a warm and welcoming royal family. How nice it is to see all four children there. The Belgian royals have done a wonderful job with their children. They look respectful and happy to be there.

Mathilde transitioned from her beautiful day look to a splendid evening gown and I am so pleased she decided to wear the order of the chrysanthemum.

Every single one of them looks simply amazing. I have nothing but praise for all of them. Most surprising is Empress Masako's gown. It's the first time I'm seeing her wearing something of a style like this and she looks fabulous! First the very different hat in the morning to her usual style, and now this lace overlaying a strapless sheath gown underneath. Could this be the start of something sartorially new that we might expect to see more of in the future? I'd be very pleased if it is. Mathilde is a vision in her Armani Privée gown. I don't care too much for the decorative elements at the top of the gown (I don't know what they're meant to be - Japanese fans maybe?) but this is a minor quibble, as Mathilde looks stunning in the gown. The fit is perfect and the train pooling at her feet is lovely. She looks very elegant. I also like that both ladies chose similar light colours, and of course, their jewellery is flat out stunning, especially Masako's necklace which fuses seamlessly with the gown.
Both the young princesses are also lovely and Ps. Eléonore has a special beauty that was made for wearing tiaras. So nice to see her at her first tiara event. Ps Elisabeth, as always, is grace personified.
Not to be outdone, the men put on their own show of elegance, and look handsomely smart and regal.
This entire double, back-to-back series of state visits by the Japanese Emperor and Empress with their close European friends has been a treat, made even more special by the warm friendship we've seen between them.

Queen Mathilde's dress design is based on the Japanese uchiwa fan (a fan used to create a breeze). I appreciate the thoughtful touch of incorporating Japanese culture into the dress. it is lovely.

Oh thank you for sharing this! Now that you did, I realize it is like my small paper fan in this form, as it is foldable, it goes perfectly in a handbag (where it is sitting now).
