King Frederik of Denmark Celebrates His 58th Birthday with His Family

Queen Mary wore a silk blouse by Giorgio Armani, and trousers by Proenza Schouler, Princess Josephine

King Frederik X of Denmark turned 58 on May 26, 2026. In keeping with tradition, the King greeted the public from the balcony of Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg alongside his family. The King appeared on the balcony together with Queen Mary, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine. To mark the King’s 58th birthday, new portraits taken in the Throne Room at Christiansborg Palace shortly before the occasion were also released.

Both Mary and Josephine look nice. Could they have looked better? Of course, but nice is good too.
Mary's blouse is obviously an older rewear (2005, perhaps?) and the coiled rosette gives this away. If she had changed the rosette to something more modern, such as a lovely silk flower, it might have improved the look. P.Josephine wears the long dress well, but I'd have liked a shorter dress and shorter sleeves for one as young as she for a daytime event such as this. Regardless, it's lovely to see all 4 of them. Happy Birthday to K. Frederik

How lucky famous men are that typically they are not scrutinised on every single detail and found wanting if a sleeve length or flower detail is not to the reviewer’s standard. Just a tailored suit and a clean face and they are accepted. Women are scrutinised and expected to be perfect in every detail. This happens from the red carpet, Hollywood, newspapers, to here. So much perfection demanded, so tough for women.

    2. I think I love Mary's blouse and Josephine's dress as well. The men are fine.

I like Mary’s blouse very much. The rosette balances the rest and provides a focal point. A silk flower could also work. I think the whole family look gorgeous.

@Anon 03:41 This is a blog that primarily discusses female fashion, not men's, since women's fashion typically has more features to discuss. But don't worry, when some men make an occasional appearance in the photos on this blog, there are often readers who will comment on their appearance and clothing. You're welcome to join them. And you definitely don't have to be a famous male royal to attract or avoid comment. Nor does it have anything to do with luck.

Thank you Anon 9:13. I have followed this blog for many years, when it was still My New Royals. I have slowly seen comments become more and more personal and demeaning. My reflection on watching royal fashion and royal fashion commenters for years is that the men are rarely criticised to the minute detail that women are. It’s as if the commenters expect perfection from people who are after just human, who have feelings, who have preferences, who have bad and good days. I doubt that any commenter here looks remotely as polished as any of the women they criticise, and I find that unfair. There are commenters like Ava and Achard who always make elegant observations while always remaining polite. It’s possible and I just don’t want this comment section to get meaner. Hence I speak up, but never in a rude way. Because I am sure we can still have a lively debate while remaining kind to the subjects and each other.

@Anon 9:13 In what way does the coiled rosette "give away" the age of Mary's Armani blouse? What is it exactly on/in/about a coiled rose that makes it not contemporary enough? I'am dying to know more about this exciting detail.

@Anon 21:32 Because I recall that those coiled (and sometimes folded) flower embellishments were popular and common for dresses and tops 20 years ago. That's why I said what I did, and it turns out that I wasn't wrong about the age of Mary's blouse either. You rarely see them on clothing nowdays. You might find them perched on some hats now, if at all.

To Anon 17:32 some of the comments on this blog are very hard to read and I can only be glad I don't know the commenters in real life because they seem awful.

  3. Mary's blouse is very feminine, pretty and elegant. The blouse has some interesting features, that give it a individual look which I like. The round rosette looks good, adding some eye candy!, interest! I quite like this. The gather of fabric looks soft and appealing. Her white pants are refreshing, overall very elegant. Princess Josephine, looks pretty, but I don't like the tiered effect. They are a close knit family, it shows, lovely to see.

I’m not blown away by either lady’s outfit but there are fine enough. My only nit is that the Sandro dress needs a slip for the photos from behind, which let the sunlight filter through.

Look at the feet in photo 4 they're all standing at 10 to 2. He's a dish ! as they say in my part of England

Lovely family! The men are so dapper in their suits. The girls look great. I love the blouse Mary is wearing, what a great and different design, the rosette contrasting so well with the flowing aspect. And a very sweet and rewearable Sandro dress for Josephine; these longer dresses are so comfortable to wear and also appropriately covering for a balcony appearance with a crowd looking up at you (where the last thing you want is a short dress as another commenter suggested!)

Appropriate covering for a balcony appearance??? I wasn't suggesting that she wear a mini skirt. Nor can anyone standing on the ground from that far away distance see up a dress that would be just 6"-12" shorter from the ankle. Get real.
If you're worried about those things, what must you be thinking about the fact in photos 4 and 7, that Josephine's dress is quite see-through against the light, for all to see? Yep, I can just imagine.

Marys blouse is a rewear : an Armani blouse från 2006 when she was pregnant with Christian, so you are almost right 😁

Especially Vincent and Frederik, who really seem to have a lot in common. That stance is really typical of athletic people.

Checked the Sandro site re the maxi dress here. Eur500 for 70% viscose + 30% linen! Decided it’s definitely expensive for what it is and perhaps not as nice to wear as when I saw it in these photos and looked to be cotton. But it’s primarily viscose which is a cheap material. Seems Sandro has done too well and ramped up prices way beyond the garment cost + reasonable markup! Looking at the dress I imagined eur150-200 cost not 500!

Shout on to Anon 9:58 for identifying the blouce. It reinforces the fact that QM really is a great advocate for sustainable fashion.
I love the simplicity of the look. I think she’s wearing lightweight linen pants with the blouce. Lovely.

I like Mary’s even if it is a rewear, very interesting design, fits well. Josephine looks lovely however it appears that you can see thru fabric when the light catches it. Perhaps a slip would fix the problem, and yes they still make slips.

Yes, the blouse is 21 years old and as beautiful as it was 21 years ago, it is a very unique looking blouse. Good for the designer who can make a piece that stands over fashion in its beauty and double good for a royal who wears it.
