On April 6, 2026, Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and their daughter, Princess Aiko, arrived in Fukushima Prefecture to inspect the reconstruction progress 15 years after the Great East Japan Earthquake. They visited the town of Futaba, where the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant is located. They also toured a facility that conveys the memories and lessons of the disaster and met with those affected.
During their two-day, one-night visit, the Imperial Family will also tour the towns of Tomioka, Okuma, and Namie, all within a 20-kilometer radius of the nuclear plant. The plant spans Futaba and Okuma, and this is the Emperor’s first visit to municipalities hosting the facility since the accident. This marks Princess Aiko’s first visit to areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
