Queen Sofía toured the exhibition 'The Flag That Came from the Sea: The Colours That Identify Us,' on display at the Naval Museum until 5 April.
On March 4, 2026, Queen Sofía of Spain visited the exhibition “The Flag That Came from the Sea. The Colours That Identify Us” (La Bandera que vino de la mar. Los colores que nos identifican) at the Naval Museum in Madrid. The exhibition is dedicated to the 240-year history of the national flag. During her visit, the Queen toured the exhibition and examined the pieces illustrating the origin of the national flag and its direct connection with the Navy.
The exhibition commemorates the decision taken by King Carlos III in May 1785 to provide the ships of the Royal Navy with a flag that would be easily visible and recognizable from a great distance at sea. It brings together 57 original pieces tracing the 240-year history of the Spanish flag since it was established as the ensign of the Royal Navy in 1785.

ردحذفThere must be an interesting story behind the brooch; it seems to have a naval theme -- a mast and pennon, a rope and a line of flags --and the letter S must surely be for "Sofia". Lyra
I would really enjoy seeing a good closeup photo of the Queen’s brooch. It’s very intriguing and I suspect has a naval connection, with what appear to be several enameled pennants.

Up close, the brooch is quite beautiful. Her pantsuit looks stylish and fits well. I like her blouse, interesting neckline. A subtle but elegant outfit. Lovely to see her.
