Belgium's Royal Family Attends Memorial Mass for Deceased Family Members

King Philippe, Queen Mathilde, Prince Laurent, Princess Claire, Princess Delphine, Prince Guillaume and Princess Sibilla

On 24 February 2026, King Philippe, Queen Mathilde , Prince Laurent, Princess Claire, Princess Delphine of Belgium and Mr. James O’Hare, as well as Prince Guillaume and Princess Sibilla of Luxembourg, attended the annual Eucharistic celebration in memory of the deceased members of the Royal Family. The Mass took place at the Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk van Laken or Église Notre-Dame de Laeken) in Laeken.

Traditionally, members of the Royal Family gather at the church in mid-February for a remembrance Mass in honour of all deceased family members. The Church of Our Lady houses the Royal Crypt, the permanent resting place of all reigning Belgian monarchs and their spouses. The ceremony is held annually around the date of death of Albert I of Belgium, who died in 1934 following a fatal fall from the rocks at Marche-les-Dames.

Wow. Mathdile's dress and hat....wow. Reminds of the crow villains from the cartoons. A rare miss from QM - I really hate this one and usually she nails it. This is horrid. Even Phillipe looks alittle like..."whoa".

Hey 16:30, you can write opinion hete, but keep it kind. “I really hate this” is much too unkind.

If one say "wow" one normally mean it is good or great or beautiful....
Apparently your wow means something else. Even the king who is wearing a normal black winter coat cannot do it well in your eyes. If you are a hating everything that much, please don't comment at all.

SO to amend my earlier comment: QUEEN Mathdile's coat and hat are wow - really not flattering! The extremely LARGE collar overwhelms her face and her body and does nothing to show off her lovely face or beautiful smile. The hat almost completely covers her face which is too bad. Rarely does QUEEN Mathdile wear unattractive clothing but I will say that this, IN MY OPINION, LIKE ALL OPINIONS HERE are MY OWN and I think that THIS particular outfit is not flattering and is unattractive on her. I find the outfit horrid because it reminds me, very much of cartoon crows in the large hats and I don't believe either the QUEEN (or her stylist) intentionally styled her to look that way and it is unfortunate. KING Phillipe looks as good a man can look in a black coat, white shirt and gray tie. The look on his face in picture 4 appears to be almost surprise - as in whoa! surprise! Maybe he is also thinking he can't see his lovely wife's face beneath her hat either. Or perhaps he's just anticpating the style blogs that will judge not only how they look and what they wear but also the comments that all the 'judges' will make regarding not only the clothes people wear but how people comment on them and the words - like wow! or whoa! or first names instead of titles - they use to do that. But luckily for all of us we have these word judges right here, to make sure we all agree with their opinions, we don't express disbelieve when using the word WOW (because WOW is ONLY for "good, great or beautiful" NOT for surprise, bafflement or general disbelief). I can't help but notice tho that all of the 'judges' of my comment are anonymous also. Um. Well I'm Lorraine if you have any more criticisms of my critique. And why not sign your names too so we know who our word judges are? I would bet if we all signed our names we'd see less nasty commentary about the comments and more actual style comments. Then again, these 'ladies' can probably prove me wrong since none of them actually had anything to say about the clothes.....

You cannot write the name Mathilde correctly and you cannot count either. On photo N° 4 King Philippe has a serious face because they are in the middle of the ceremony and are listening to what the bishop is saying.
I think you mean photo N°7 on which King Philippe is smiling to the people who are waiting for him and Queen Mathilde to say hallo and shake hands when they come out of the church after the ceremony has ended. That is how it goes every time when a ceremony in the church is over the people who are outside waiting with flowers to hand over to Queen Mathilde and also to Princess Claire (not visible on these pictures) and maybe other female members of the BRF. So everything you write in your comment Lorraine is not how it happens really. You have a lot of imagination. Next time better to inform yourself before writing a comment.

Still no name anon 8:13? Maybe you should try to just be a nicer person. Clearly you have issues and quite an imagination as well. My comments are relative to the clothing in this picture. You are just nasty.

I find the queens hat with the wide brim a bit large, perhaps it is meant to be to give discreet privacy for a solemn occasion or to balance the large collar of her coat. Delphine in a decent hat and coat, which she stands out in due to the light colour.

Actually, P.Delphine was true to herself in strange shoes. https://www.gettyimages.com/editorial-images/entertainment/event/belgium-royal-family-attends-the-annual-mass-in-memory-of-deceased-members-of-the-royal-family-at-the-notre-dame-de-laeken-church/776463025?editorialproducts=all

@Anon 08:09 - thank you, hilarious, the shoes! I was already wondering (cf 18:33) about Delphine going just blergh and nothing more. She stays true to herself (and thereby quite annoying for others).

Yes, terrific is the word. It could be the Betsy dress von Natan and even if we don't see everything, this top horizontality is always a win on Mathilde's thin upper body. And the hat is beautiful, no idea why this size could be not appropriate in any sense of the word for a memorial mass. It is black, it is simple and not quirky and she looks so good in it. Delphine - well maybe she does not have a darker coat, but I rather think she chooses to stand out by means of colour this time, instead e.g. by means of one of her own fabric designs.

Q Mathilde looks fantastic; she looks good with bigger hats too. Nice to see Laurent and Claire there as well. What happen to Delphine this is a nice coat and hat and nicely fitting in IMO. Maybe the coat could have been a darker color, but she did good this time. Pss Lea was there too, and the Luxembourg GD family was represented as well. Sadly, some family members missing, but it could not be helped.

- Dorothe -

The other royal ladies wore all black too, except Princess Delphine. It has always been the custom that the BRF wore black, navy or grey at the remembrance mass for the deceased members of the royal family. So your remark about Queen Mathilde's black outfit is not correct.

Queen Mathilde is wearing a black dress underneath a black cape. Her black hat is a rewear. She has it since a very long time. Her earrings are the pearl and diamond earrings she regularly wears. On the cape she wears the "waterfall" brooch. I think she looks very stylish. Contrary to her usual outfits, Princess Delphine is wearing a classic camel coat and a hat in the same color. She looks very good like that and the color suits her. Not visible on these pictures are the colourful ankle boots she wears under black trousers. There must be colors otherwise it wouldn't be the real Princess Delphine. The nephews and nieces from Luxembourg and Liechtenstein were also present.
Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz were not present. I wonder if Princess Astrid is still not feeling well.

I don't know if you refer to Queen Mathilde's black outfit or to Princess Delphine's black trousers ? I looked it up again to be sure and the blogspot about Queen Mathilde says she is dressed in a black dress and a black cape coat. Maybe because of the sunshine the black looked a bit like dark green.

@cc and Dorothe - such comments. Considering Q.Mathilde has been a Catholic her entire life and has attended countless church services for various reasons I think she is a good judge of `appropriate` clothing. Her choice may meet with your disapproval but I think she looks elegant and `appropriate`. Love the brooch.
