On January 17, 2026, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, together with Crown Princess Leonor (the Princess of Asturias), Infanta Sofía, Queen Sofía, Infanta Elena, and Infanta Cristina, attended the memorial service for Princess Irene of Greece at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Andrew and Saint Demetrios in Madrid.
Princess Irene of Greece passed away on Thursday, January 15, at the age of 83 at the Palace of La Zarzuela. Princess Irene was the younger sister of Queen Sofía. The burial will take place, as was the case with King Constantine of Greece, in the Royal Cemetery of the Tatoi Palace.
All have appropriate attire for a prayer service. Lovely to see how attentive the girls are to their grandmother.

ردحذفI find it so sad that the press or paparazzi were allowed to take and publish close up photos of young people in fresh grief. This is fundamentally wrong, regardless of whether they are public figures.

حذفAll famous people's last ceremonies as a memorial service or a funeral are news. The happy ceremonies which took place during their life have been reported too. If nobody can see videos or photos of this, the family can ask for strictly private ceremonies. Nowadays it is often the case with funerals of common people. The family of the deceased person announces that the ceremony will take place in private only for the nearest family.

They will likely attend the actual funeral in Athens on Monday. The prayer service in Spain was not the the final service for the late Princess.
