King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima are undertaking a state visit to the Republic of Suriname at the invitation of President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons. On December 1, 2025, President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons and her husband, Glenn Geerlings, welcomed the King and Queen during an official welcome ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Paramaribo.

Afterwards, the King and Queen laid a wreath at the statue of Mama Sranan, which symbolises “Mother Suriname”. The statue depicts a woman holding five children in her arms, each representing one of Suriname’s demographic groups. In the evening, President Simons will host a state banquet in honour of the royal couple.

I very much like the relaxed (and still smart looking) formality of Maxima's full ensemble (hat included) for this reception by the Surinamese president. Suriname is a warm and sunny S. American country with a long historical connection to the Netherlands, and I think that Maxima's outfit reflects this. Any other style of outfit and hat combo (like we are used to seeing at state receptions elsewhere) would have been too much, even though quite acceptable. The King, who is the main guest, is dressed appropriately as well. Were I to change anything, I'd have made the underskirt of Maxima's dress just a couple of inches longer. The points of the sleeves, the V-neck, and the belted sash all look good.

      Hi Anon 9:13.
      Well written as always.
I would just add that this is my favorite outfit of Maxima' s
      in a long time.

I like this dress, the hat compliments the dress. I like the hat though it obscures her face at times, but great for the harsh sun.

The dress is fine, but I would prefer this type of summer dress for a less formal meeting with the residents or the Dutch community in Suriname. For a meeting with the president or with official authorities, she should choose more formal clothes.
That hat is terrible. It reminds me of the hats of cotton pickers in old photos. The excuse that Suriname has a warm sunny climate is not valid. The other participants in the meeting on this visit are wearing classic suits, uniforms, some even dresses, all without a maxi hat covering their face. At least once if Maxima would adapt to her hosts, - but we probably won't see that.

PLease explain what you mean by "this type of summer dress" not being appropriate for a formal meeting. In summer, one usually wears summer dresses and this one is sure not a beach dress, but an elegant daytime dress very much suitable for a daytime welcome reception, where the gentlemen wear normal daytime suits. The hat does not cover her face except when bowing down to sign a guest book which might be excusable even for sharp hat critics. Standing vis-a-vis and shaking hands her face is fully visible. As for adapting to her hosts - please explain why you think that your ideas about it should be accepted usage and requirement. If this would be a generally accepted requirement, rest assured that she would conform to it. But nobody requires a visitor, Queen or not, dress like the hosts do.

I agree with you Anonymous 19:29.
The comments of Anonymous 16:49 are not normal. She always thinks she knows the best. The comments she is writing are more against the person than against the clothes Queen Maxima is wearing.

Dear 16:49, I think your criticisms are a little tough! I love her dress which I find great for a tropical climate - it is elegant and beautifully accessorised - and I love her hat! The hat is not at all terrible - it’s just not to your taste and that’s completely fine! … but it’s not terrible. I find this outfit beautiful and very apt. Can’t wait to see what she wears next!

Disagree with Stephanie: love the hat and it looks wonderful on Maxima and suits the overall outfit. Beautigul!

She looks great again. This dress is very pretty and Maxima wears it well. The brooch on the tie was not necessary yet it is so Maxima I have to love it. her hat is a perfect match in both formality and the color of the band. Nude pumps are a better choice over white in my opinion.

Too casual for an official state reception, whatever the temperature .
Jewels donot make an informal dress into a formal one.

I find it very elegant. In the tropics, in all countries in the tropics, there is less formality. That said, she looks fabulously elegant, and beautiful, so well done Maxima!

@20:36 I find it kind of insensitive that when Maxima visits other countries she sometimes wears big hats - people want to see her face, not her gigantic hat. ~~Ruthie

Not insensitive Ruthie to wear a beautiful and flattering hat. As she’s out in the harsh tropical sun, it’s a wise and excellent choice.

  8. The dress looks good, cool and refreshing, the hat, love the brim, giving her face protection from the hot sun, not sure of the temperatures?

Boy I think she looks just great, including the straw hat. She is a queen and is not over dressed for daytime, nor under dressed for the occasion. The brim of the hat provides shade from the sun, no need for sunglasses or squinting.

- Dorothe -

Love this outfit. It looks so cool and comfortable and climate appropriate , yet still dressy enough. Maxima's jewellery is a delight, especially the earrings and brooch, and the hat elevates the look further in a stylish and summery way.
I would prefer to see one of her other wide sunhats with a more rounded crown shape -- but that is a very minor consideration. Overall an excellent look. Lyra

Hat, odd to wear such a low hat, cannot see her face half the time. Dress sort of ok. However, the sleeves with huge turned up cuffs, the equally over the top huge belt of fabric handing down, topped off with a gaudy pin, just too much. Naysayers, stay away, this is my opinion.

If you state your opinion here, others can post a reply to it. It helps us all think before we push PUBLISH! Sorry you don’t like the dress or hat. Thank goodness it’s not you but Maxima wearing them - and looking fabulous and beautifully dressed for the tropical sun. I would love to own this glorious hat.
