On December 1, 2025, Queen Sofía of Spain attended the 8th edition of the Evolution Awards and the 1st edition of the Emiliano Aguirre Award ceremony at the Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos, Castilla y León. The awards are organized by the Atapuerca Foundation. The Evolution Award for Human Values was presented to the President of the Regional Government of Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco.
The Evolution Award for Scientific Work was presented to Juan Luis Arsuaga, José María Bermúdez de Castro (whose daughter accepted the award on his behalf), and Eudald Carbonell for their contributions to the understanding of human evolution and the development of the Atapuerca Foundation. The Emiliano Aguirre Award was presented to the European Parliament, and was received by María Andrés, Director of the European Parliament Office.
