On December 17, 2025, Queen Silvia of Sweden visited Munich to receive the Bavarian distinction “Bayerische Staatsmedaille für soziale Verdienste” (Bavarian State Medal for Social Merit). The medal was presented by Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder and Bavarian State Minister for Family, Labour and Social Affairs Ulrike Scharf.
The Queen was welcomed to Bavaria during a ceremony at Max-Joseph-Platz, attended by Minister-President Söder and a large crowd of Munich residents. She was awarded the state’s medal for social merit in recognition of her founding of the World Childhood Foundation and her longstanding work to combat sexual violence and abuse against children.
During her visit, Queen Silvia also attended an Advent concert at the Herkulessaal in the Munich Residence, together with representatives of the World Childhood Foundation. The Bavarian State Medal for Social Merit is awarded to individuals who have rendered outstanding services to the Free State of Bavaria and its citizens in the social sphere.

I've heard it on the radio, everybody in Munich was excited. Silvia spoke German of course. The Childhood Foundation also has a house now in Würzburg (northern Bavaria, close to Frankfurt) where children can turn to.
ReplyDeleteSilvia met Carl-Gustav in Munich when she worked as a hostess during olympic games.
La reine Silvia a bien mérité cette médaille !
ReplyDeleteIt is the custom as well in Bavaria as on the other side of the border in Tirol to distribute medals and diplomas. The people there are very happy when they have a reason to distribute medals to their visitors.
ReplyDeleteI received a medal and a diploma when I stayed for the x time in the same town in the same hotel in Tirol. After 5, 10, 15 years etc... The Musikkapelle is going out in the village and afterwards they are going to the town hall where the distribution of the medals and diplomas take place. The people of the village are all going to the town hall to be part of the festive evening. They are of course wearing their traditional costumes and the women are wearing a dirndl, the traditional dress. Everybody is drinking "obstler" to honor the people who are receiving a medal.....
Of course the medal Queen Silvia is receiving has a deeper meaning because it is awarded by the state of Bayern to people who have rendered outstanding social services....
Queen Silvia is well dressed in a white jacket and skirt with a burgundy blouse, I think. A good choice for the event. The lady in the blue outfit is well dressed too.
Unusual pocket flaps so close to the hem of the jacket. She looks lovely. The children seem delighted to meet her.
ReplyDeleteSilvia looks great; but I really love the blue outfit of the lady next to her, very classy. ~~Ruthie
