Queen Silvia Receives the Bavarian State Medal for Social Merit in Munich

On December 17, 2025, Queen Silvia of Sweden visited Munich to receive the Bavarian distinction “Bayerische Staatsmedaille für soziale Verdienste” (Bavarian State Medal for Social Merit). The medal was presented by Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder and Bavarian State Minister for Family, Labour and Social Affairs Ulrike Scharf.

The Queen was welcomed to Bavaria during a ceremony at Max-Joseph-Platz, attended by Minister-President Söder and a large crowd of Munich residents. She was awarded the state’s medal for social merit in recognition of her founding of the World Childhood Foundation and her longstanding work to combat sexual violence and abuse against children.

During her visit, Queen Silvia also attended an Advent concert at the Herkulessaal in the Munich Residence, together with representatives of the World Childhood Foundation. The Bavarian State Medal for Social Merit is awarded to individuals who have rendered outstanding services to the Free State of Bavaria and its citizens in the social sphere.

  1. I've heard it on the radio, everybody in Munich was excited. Silvia spoke German of course. The Childhood Foundation also has a house now in Würzburg (northern Bavaria, close to Frankfurt) where children can turn to.
    Silvia met Carl-Gustav in Munich when she worked as a hostess during olympic games.
