On December 19, 2025, the traditional official Christmas photographs of the Norwegian royal family—featuring King Harald, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, and Prince Sverre Magnus—were released under the title “Merry Christmas!” This year’s Christmas photos were taken by photographer Ola Vatn in the Red Salon at the Royal Palace in Oslo.

Recently, the Norwegian Royal Palace announced that various tests conducted this autumn have shown a negative development in Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s health, and that doctors at Rikshospitalet have therefore begun preparations for an assessment for a possible lung transplant. In the meantime, the Royal Palace has stated that the Crown Princess wishes to continue working as much as she is able. Crown Princess Mette-Marit was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018.

    1. It is borrowed from her moms closet. MM wore this in 2018 😉

  3. The fabric texture of the queens dress makes it very pretty. Not sure about the dark colour for Ingrid, though it looks okay. The blue blouse is a nice colour for the crown princess, however I find the sharp contrast with the skirt not the best. And the men all look very nice in their suits, especially Sverre, finally a suit that is not too tight. Lovely family photo

  4. I like these photographs very much, with the three generations and the festive tree in the background. I can imagine this is a difficult time for them with Mette Marit’s worsening health condition.

  6. I wish them all the best this Christmas. Theirs has not been a simple year with regard to ageing, family or health. They are no doubt in the fortunate position to receive the very best of help and care and I hope that helps bring peace.

    1. I hope the Crown Princess gets the best medical care available and I also hope the less fortunate get the best medical care they deserve too! I am not saying this is the case but there have been instances where those of her standing and wealth get the transplants and other life saving medical care in favor of the less fortunate! I do wish her a speedy recovery!

    2. I had not heard of her health update until reading this post. A lung transplant is a tough diagnosis. They did announce that she will not get preferred status, so kudos for addressing that issue. I wish for her to have a long and healthy life with her family.

  10. The first photo has a terrible composition, but better colours, the second group photo has weirdly yellowed and toned down colours but a better overall composition. I love Sverre Magnus’s tie and Mette-Marit’s blouse. I don’t like the Queen’s shoes, ever. Ingrid’s hair is limp. But all in all, a sweet family photo for what must be an emotional Christmas. Let’s hope MM will get her lung transplant quickly and without serious complications.

Paloma.

  14. Dear Royal Watcher, After your interesting remarks, I had a good look at the surroundings: The beautiful floor, the furniture, the discreet Christmas tree etc.
I noticed how simply the family is dressed, even the king‘s shoes are not properly polished, the historical golden chairs. This carefully composed photo seems to symbolize the Crown and its continuity in a fragile situation.
