Bhutan’s King and Queen Receive Honorary Doctorates from Chulalongkorn University

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema of Bhutan were conferred honorary doctoral degrees

On December 22, 2025, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema of Bhutan were conferred honorary doctoral degrees by Chulalongkorn University at a ceremony held at the university’s Auditorium and Maha Chulalongkorn Building in Bangkok. Founded in 1917, Chulalongkorn University is Thailand’s oldest and leading institution of higher learning.

The King was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in International Development Studies in recognition of his visionary leadership in advancing peace, inclusive development, good governance, youth empowerment, and innovative national initiatives, as well as for strengthening international engagement and Bhutan–Thailand relations.

Queen Jetsun Pema was conferred a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology and Anthropology in recognition of her distinguished service in promoting social well-being, environmental conservation, public health and mental well-being, the inclusion of persons with disabilities, and grassroots economic development.
