On November 29, 2025, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh attended the Coral Gold Cup Meeting at Newbury Racecourse. The Coral Gold Cup is a Premier Handicap National Hunt steeplechase, which is open to horses aged four years or older. After the race, the Duchess presented the Coral Gold Cup to the winning horse’s owner, Bryan Drew, and jockey Tristan Durrell. For the occasion, the Duchess wore a khaki coat by Claire Mischevani.

Hmmm, I like the colour and length. Just not sure if this is the best look for her. The prince dapper as always.
ReplyDeleteWell that pink ribbon really stands out! Ruins the outfit. Her husband looks very well dressed in a lovely suit.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely! MR
DeleteI love the contrasting ribbon. For me it makes the outfit.
DeleteColorwise they should have switched the hats, except for the pink ribbon 😉. I love her coat.
DeleteDuchess looks like she is on a Safari! the coat looks heavy, the scarf wrapped around the hat looks out of place!
ReplyDeleteA complete mismatch and looks out of place. MR
DeleteI agree. Also, too much material in the skirt makes the Duchess look very heavy.
DeleteWhoa 18:49, what are you wearing on safari if this is your version of safari clothes?! Much too warm I’d say for that … on the other hand, very apt for a wet English late autumn day spent outdoors. Warm and cute and English racing horsey stylish.
ReplyDeleteEdward is looking very dapper here - is it a new much better fitted suit? They make a beautiful pair and Sophie looks wonderful in this gorgeous romantic coat and the touch of colour. The bright pink may have meaning at the day as the man behind her is sporting the same pink in his tie.
ReplyDeleteCette tenue portée par la duchesse Sophie n’est point ma préférée.
ReplyDeleteNéanmoins, j’apprécie la couleur de son manteau, son beau visage et la couleur de sa pochette.
-Astrid.
That coat and the boots are wonderful, but why the pink ribbon? It does not match at all!
ReplyDeleteAlthough Prince Edward looks like he ran away from a black and white movie of the years1940-1950, he is dressed better than his wife. Duchess Sophie's coat is a big no for me because it is too long (as usual) and because of the drab color and also because of the style. The hat doesn't match the coat and could be from a complete different period in history.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was also old movie. They both look so wonderfully old-fashioned.
DeleteThis is a nice hat, but it is begging not to be worn 1. with this hot pink hat band and 2. together with this coat and 3. with this bag. The are separate incompatibility complaints, e.g. the hat band and the bag also have a little private animosity, because the bag could live with that hat but not the band. Meanwhile, the coat groans: "well I am neutral, but neutrality has its limits when attacked from too many sides simultaneously!" O my ... dear Sophie ruins each and every piece by forcing them to present themselves together.
ReplyDeleteOh my - these all look like random pieces pulled in a hurry with not much thought given to coordination. It seems to me the boots and the hat are a good match. With a different color band, this could work. But the bright pink hat band and the plum colored bag are fighting with rest of the ensemble. I’d have gone with a bag to match the tan of the boots and hat and maybe a muted color foulard incorporating the same tan with the green of the coat as a hat band. Finally, I would have kept the belt with coat.
ReplyDeleteTalking about that belt, look at the available space on Sophie. Nobody really wants a belt to sit directly under their breasts.
DeleteThe DoE is wearing a nice fitted suit, Sophie… 🤐
ReplyDeleteThe Duke looks beautifully groomed. Well attired and groomed. His fitted suit really looks great!
ReplyDeleteThe Duchess looks lovely, the coat looks heavy but maybe its colder and Sophie wanted more insulation? who knows? I like the colorful clutch, adding a splash of color, her boots, I like the color. Her hat suits her well, though not so sure of the color of her hat band. Regardless she looks lovely.
Where to begin with this look. It’s disastrous. The coat(which is a rewear)is,as with all DoE dresses coats and skirts, far too long and far too heavy. Just by looking at her it’s obvious that the incorrect undergarments are being worn, there’s zero support. As for the bright pink ribbon, what was she thinking? It matches upto nothing she’s wearing. Sophie I feel is in a rut. She very rarely wears anything that flattering or compliments her shape and height. She should take a leaf out of Zara Tindalls book, and hire a stylists who will dress you to your best. Especially when you’re representing the Monarchy and the UK on the global stage.
ReplyDeleteLowri.
I can imagine that there are (more modern royal) women who simply don't want anyone to "dress them to their best" because they want to dress themselves - and Sophie's choices are definitely her own. - It is really not for everyone, royal or not and at least I feel that it is belittling/condescending to say so (alongside with "taking a leaf from someone else's book"). I would feel hurt at such suggestions. We can criticize the outfit with due respect - but not so much personal decisions like this.
DeleteA good stylist takes into account the personal style and body type of their client and makes selections that compliment that style and suggest what is most flattering on his/her body. They suggest the correct accessories to elevate what is being worn, not distract from it. While she does not have the most expensive wardrobe, Sophie's clothes are not cheap and it is a waste of money to purchase clothes that make her look older and bigger, sometimes frumpy. For example, a simple alteration to this coat by shortening it a little would have made a big difference. She is wearing a burgundy dress under her coat so burgundy boots would have pulled this look together instead of these random camel colored boots. She has a lot of hats, so a different hat or changing out the band to one that matched her dress would have pulled this look together so much better. Little details can make a big difference. A stylist would also suggest that she alter her clothes for proper fit. Oftentimes her clothes do not fit properly. A stylist can be a very wise investment. Sophie is such an active royal and seen in her professional capacity so often, it would be nice if she put a little of that effort into her appearance. Unless she is wearing a dress, she seems to have difficulty pulling together a cohesive outfit. The randomness of her various choices are a distraction from her work.
DeleteI remain so incredibly confused. Remember 2011-2014 Sophie? She was in her fashion era then. Perfect undergarments to support some really spectacular fashions. Perhaps it was just a phase. There was also talk at the time that she was encouraged internally not to outshine more senior royal ladies, as she began to receive a great deal of fashion-related attention and even appeared on the international best-dressed list at the time!! I really miss that.
Delete@Anon 14:39 yes, a good stylist can make all this. But times have changed and I imagine quite a lot of royal women just want to wear what they like, the idea that they lack taste does not seem to occur to them. It is funny because everybody admits to lacking whatever - a memory for faces or love of poetry or hundreds of other things. But they would never admit that they don't have taste to choose and compose an outfit for themselves.
Delete10:30 thank you. I too do not understand that overt criticisms of lovely Sophie’s own dress choice. She doesn’t need a stylist and she is not getting dressing wrong. These are choices. Stop being so hurtful all you critics and let her dress in her way. She likes longer hemlines. It’s not wrong - it’s choice. Fashion has room for all different tastes and it’s wonderfully refreshing to see people choosing other than boring mainstream.
Delete20:16 You are reading between the lines. Sophie has her own style which could be enhanced by properly fitted clothing and coordinating accessories. Her style is not wrong, but badly executed at times. Think about the comments about Maxima. A good deal of her wardrobe is disliked. It is really no different. Her clothes don't appeal to the masses but they are her. I would never dream of wanting her to change who she is, just as Sophie should remain true to herself. The fact is that she is not strong at putting individual pieces together. That is where a professional can do wonders. She likes to wear a blazer over a dress. A stylist could teach her which of her blazers would work well for layering over a dress, or give her some other options to make a relatively casual dress for formal. Since this is a fashion blog, where we discuss the fashion of royals, it is fair to point out what, to some people, could be improved. When she wears a shorter dress, she immediately looks more pulled together and more youthful. I don't know why she has gone in the direction she has, but it will get discussed on a fashion blog. The point is to wear what you like but to do it well.
DeleteDear Anon 20:16, I was the one who stated that most women want to make their own choices nowadays. But on the other hand, it does not mean that own choices are good choices, especially if you are in the public eye. So dear Sophie should make her choices - because she is an independent person, but on the other hand, we are allowed to criticise her sometimes really quite appalling choices, because she presents herself to the public in her function as a royal and as such, her choices are free to opine about. She could find other ways of developing her personal taste - it does not have to be a permanent stylist.
Delete@14:39 - I couldn’t agree with anymore! She needs the masterful eye of stylist. I think even a Sophie would be pleasantly surprised at the outcome. Sophie has a great figure and great legs. She has a closet full of designer outfits that just need tailoring to her specific shape.
DeleteLowri.
I very much like the bow details at the collar and cuffs of Sophie’s coat. Her hat looks odd with the coat, both the style and the color.

Edward’s forever dressed till perfection in my opinion, love his style. Isn’t that called classic? Also Sophie’s outfit is lovely! Ac
ReplyDeletePour moi la tenue de Sophie aujourd’hui est un échec total.
ReplyDeleteShe just does not have the ability of putting a look together, it is like she is trying but she just does not get there, too bad because accessorizing is everything.....It is an art!
ReplyDeleteShe has the ability to put abc look together and constantly dies so. If it’s not to your preference it doesn’t mean it’s wrong!
DeleteThe charm of Sophie’s hat is the screaming colour that doesnot match at all: love it!!
ReplyDeleteAnd wow: Edward is a stunning dresser!
We are always giving out advice about the need for a “pop of colour” .
ReplyDeleteSo the Duchess has heard our advice and hear it is (the hat band).
A monochrome ensemble with a “pop of colour”.
And, I love the Gatsby 1920’s look of the Duke’s suit.
Together they look “smashing” and seem to be enjoying their day at the races (steeplechase).
I doubt Sophie has "heard' the need for a pop of colour from this blog. She simply gets it wrong on some occasions, this one being one of those moments. Hat does not go with the coat, the bag, or the boots. Edward is spot on handsome as usual for him.
DeleteEdwina
@Deadeggs: yes, pop of colour advice is abundantly given here, right, but that does not mean that it is always rightly given. Sometimes it is just a cliché used because nothing else comes to mind :-) . In this case, no pop of colour was missing but a concept for the whole outfit instead of total randomness.
DeleteEdwina - it’s not wrong. It’s how she enjoys dressing. It’s totally fine. I happen to think she looks fantastic for an outdoors wet day at the English races and I love the pop of colour too.
Delete20.18 Edwina did not say sophie got it wrong, she stated, she gets it wrong on some occasions, this being one of those moments. Clarity of reading, responding is in order. A moment to grab a hat that may have looked good from a closet shelf, to how it actually looked outside in the natural light, we've all done that. It's a moment, not a life time. lol The color simply does not match, and looks wrong for the time of year, the even, and paired with the other pieces she pulled out of the closet.
DeleteI like the colour of the coat however it is not giving a good silhouette. The hat suits her well, not the best though she looks great.
ReplyDeleteStop attacking Sophie. If she’s not dressing to your fashion expectations, consider that across the world and in different circles, there are many different styles. Then, each of us with enough money to do so gets to experiment and find what we like. Let Sophie do her style. I happen to LOVE that she’s found her own style and love its romantic old fashioned ness.
ReplyDelete@20:20: nobody attacks Sophie, we talk about her outfits. Stop attacking us :-) for doing what is expected in a fashion blog: talking about choices good and bad.
DeleteLove this outfit for this horsey day! Cosy, cute, and practical.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what all those who are criticising Sophie by saying she’s wrong and doesn’t know how to dress herself (ouch) are wearing as they sit and criticise. Where do they get the idea that they know more than Sophie about Sophie’s work, culture, social circle, job and above all preferences?. Sophie is a very successful woman with her own decisions, preferences, needs. If you have other ideas about fashion, ok, but this does not make her wrong nor in need of a new stylist whose ideas coincide with yours!!!
ReplyDeleteoh yippy skippy, another doo gooder saying people should not speak their mind. I think far too many speak too much as it is, and bully others into submission, simply by doing what 20.29 has done. This is a blog, we are to discuss what our own perspective is regarding what the royals are wearing, good, bad, indifferent, along with hair, shoes, bags, etc. Get with the program. you are falling behind, it's nearly 2026
DeleteI adore her coat. Does anybody else think he looks a lot like his maternal grandfather?
