On November 21, 2025, King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, Infanta Sofía and Queen Sofia of Spain attended the presentation of the Order of the Golden Fleece at the Royal Palace in Madrid. King Felipe bestowed the Collar of the Order upon Queen Sofía for her dedication and commitment in the service of Spain. Felipe González, Miguel Herrero y Rodríguez de Miñón, and Miquel Roca i Junyent were also decorated.
In 1985, King Juan Carlos granted the Order of the Golden Fleece for the first time to reigning queens: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Queen Margrethe of Denmark. In 1989, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom received the distinction.
King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, Infanta Sofía, and Queen Sofía also attended a ceremony at the Spanish Parliament marking the 50th anniversary of Spain’s democratic transition. Spain’s government announced 480 new events to be held before the end of the year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Francisco Franco and the restoration of democracy.
