On Friday, 3 October 2025, Grand Duke Guillaume ascended the throne of Luxembourg after swearing an oath in a traditional ceremony at the Grand Ducal Palace. His wife, Stéphanie, became the new Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. The new Grand Duke and Grand Duchess then greeted the public during a walkabout on Place Guillaume II.

At the Cercle Cité, the Government hosted a reception for representatives of European and national institutions, as well as members of the diplomatic corps, both resident and non-resident. Guests filed past the new Grand Ducal Couple, accompanied by the Prime Minister, Luc Frieden, and the Deputy Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, to greet the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess.

  1. I am sure that this is a long and draining day for the new Grandducal couple. But I do not forgive GD Stéphanie for changing back into her blue chiffon gown for the banquet, simply plonking the Belgian Scroll Tiara on top. The afternoon reception gown shown here is again very predictable and something she has worn before. Nothing against re-wears, of course, but for that once-in-a-lifetime occasion ... well, perhaps a new day dress should have been on the agenda. The (main) Luxembourg family did not convince me today, fashion-wise (Ex GD Maria-Teresa the only exception this morning, so far).

Now that I saw the pictures: In the evening, with tiara and different light, it looks better than during the day. I don't mind that she re-wears it, but I think that she could have chosen the white one for the procession and also for the reception and the blue (if it has to be this one ...) for the evening.

I absolutely loved that she re-wore the same dress. The Grand Duke is wearing the same uniform too. I also love that the Grand Ducal family is the richest royal family in Europe, but they have always been known to approach fashion with sustainability in mind - clothes sharing even tie sharing not just with the family in Luxemburg but their relatives in Liechtenstein.
Unlike most, I loved her dress both during the day and nighttime. It gave throw back to days of old and I like the symbolism of it too.

I much prefer this dress on Stephanie than the blue chiffon one she wore earlier. Here she looks smart and chic, and every bit a modern Grand Duchess. Lovely!

      I agree.
The blue chiffon was more "Zena -Warrior Princess" than Grand Dutchess.

A much better choice for Stephanie here! She looks exceptional and so regal! The blue dress looked dated and frumpy and did her no favors. She still looked lovely since the blue is a great color on her. MR

This cream dress is superb for Stephanie. Again glad for it to have a cape to mark the very special day out from the ordinary. There’s a great pic here of Maxima’s wonderful updo and we can see she’s adorned her hair with what look to be the diamond stars from the top of her wedding tiara.

I think the blue dress from the day reworn for the evening worked splendidly. All the main royal ladies attended in sparkles and Stephanie’s dress stood out and sparkled stunningly. Maxima won most enormous tiara of the night; a stupendous crown which I don’t think she wears often.

Great choice of dress for the new GD Stephanie of Luxembourg. MT's dress is lovely and great color, just don't like the cut out for some reason. I wish them the best as the First family and Heads of State.

Stephanie is too young to wear such frumpy clothing. The blue gown is something the late Queen Mother would have worn in 1980. Stephanie needs a stylist and tailor.

Of course Stephanie has a stylist and a tailor, rubbish, the blue gown probably reflects the ancient House of Nassau but could have been designed with more flattering elements.

Another beautiful dress on Stephanie! Could anyone tell me why other royals (England, Spain, Denmark, Norway, or Sweden) did not attend this? I live in a country without royals, so I am not sure of the protocol.

Luxembourg is one of the three countries forming the "Benelux" region, a socio-political-economic alliance formed around 1948, between three neighboring countries. The other countries are Belgium and The Netherlands, hence the strong ties and the likely reason for their presence at this event.

The Belgian Royals would have been present anyway because King Philippe and Prince Henri are first cousins and the Dutch royals and the Grand dukes have both the name of Nassau in their title. They probably are related too but how and since when I don't know.

Her wedding dress was one of the most beautiful wedding dresses I've ever seen and it wasn't white white but a special color like cream but with a grey/beige shine probably because of all the embroidery and the rhine stones all over the dress.

I didn't know about this. Was there a reason given why his parents passed on the title when they look so young & healthy? Everyone looks happy & wonderful, especially the new Grand Duchess. They spread joy wherever they go.

No reason given. They simply wanted to retire and enjoy a slower paced life as all working people do. It was announced about a year ago, in stages, that this would happen in October this year so no surprise. It's becoming very common with monarchs nowadays, especially when they have younger, qualified and able heirs to take their place. Commitment isn't tied to duty anymore as monarchies become more ceremonial today compared to their different role decades and centuries ago.
