Queen Margrethe Presents Two Embroidered Chairs to King Frederik and Queen Mary

At a small gathering at Frederiksborg Castle, Queen Margrethe unveiled a unique creation for King Frederik and Queen Mary: two embroidered chairs, made on her own initiative for the royal couple to use during their visits to the castle. The embroidery, which Queen Margrethe herself designed and executed, is based on the crowned monograms of the King and Queen – a blue mirror monogram, FF X, for the King, and a red M for the Queen.

Surrounding the monograms, flowers unfold on a dark blue background with small turquoise dots: tulips, roses, lilies, irises, clematis, daisies, and marigolds. On the front edge of the chairs, Queen Margrethe added her signature, M-24, as a personal detail. The Royal House notes that the embroidered chairs are now part of the permanent exhibition at Frederiksborg Castle and will also be used when the royal couple visits.

  1. Comme la reine Mary, j'aime beaucoup le chemisier rose en soie que l'on peut combiner aussi bien avec un pantalon qu'une jupe droite !

Wow what a lovely gift. The queen looks nice in her skirt and jacket and Mary in a rewear. And of course the king has a nice fitting suit

Q.Margarethe is very talented is so many areas, all of them artistic, from costume design, set design, drawing and painting, and even embroidery and needlework. I'm so happy that without the responsibilities of being a regnant queen, she has time to indulge herself in all these talents to her hearts content. Beautiful work from a talented lady!

Paloma.

The pink blouse must almost be worn out by now. The earrings are made of quartz. Queen Mathilde had about the same but she passed them on to her daughter Princess Eléonore. When Queen Mathilde wears a pink dress she is wearing her pink kunzite/diamond earrings instead.

Absolutely love the embroidery, and Mary looks beautiful. I’m having a little laugh though, if my mother presented me and my husband with new chairs, we wouldn’t have the official photographer there nor publish the photos for global consumption. The famous do live so differently from the rest of us.

These chairs will have historical value for future generations. The photographer is simply documenting history. I don't consider them "famous", they are royal.

Actually the chairs were made for Frederiksborg slot - The Museum of National History. They are for Frederik and Mary to use when they are guests at the Museum. Therefore they are national heirlooms. That is why it makes sense to have a photographer present. If it was a private gift, it would not make sense in the same way.

Dear No Name 16:53, Your remarks are astonishing, to be polite. Denmark is one of the oldest monarchies in the world and these beautiful chairs not only reflect one of the many accomplishments of former queen Margrethe but also draw clever attention to the new reign. Living history.

Oh Virginia, thank you for finding my little giggle about a mum presenting gifts and getting in a photographer astonishing! I didn’t mean to astonish I was just reflecting how different it is to be royal and not, and thinking if it were my mother it would be different! Perhaps I shouldn’t share a little private soft moment here, even after so many years of following and commenting here with many other regulars.

What jumped at me in terms of outfits is Frederick’s tight jacket (again!!!). Seems rather tasteless to always don a popping button…

Love how Mary rewears several “foundation” pieces. This blouse has been in her closet for a decade. It’s a great example of how much more valuable a piece of high quality, well tailored clothing is. Without being absurdly expensive (btw, The Fold has reissued this blouse in this colourway recently, if anyone is interested).

Margarethe is true to her artsy personality, her outfit is so typical; lovely of her, of course, to work personally on such a symbolic gift.

It had been much interesting to see the embroidery close, perhaps instead of the picture of Mary and Fredrik
