On September 9, 2025, The King formally opened the 2025/2026 parliamentary session in the Chamber of the Riksdag, thereby marking the beginning of the new parliamentary year. Attending the day’s ceremonies were King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine, and Mr. Christopher O’Neill.

Holding a church service prior to the opening of the parliamentary session is a centuries-old tradition. Before the ceremony in the Riksdag building, the Royal Family, the Speaker of the Riksdag, and a large number of Members of Parliament attended a service at Storkyrkan, Stockholm Cathedral, to mark the occasion.

    -Astrid.

I don’t see what you see Astrid. I see all three women well coordinated and equally sophisticated. And … pretty sure Victoria knows very well the level required as it’s not her first time and she is the Crown Princess, so I’m sure we can trust and no doubt her choices!

i suppose cause they spent most of the time in America and he does not do any work for the Swedish people so no need to learn the language

...or he might have a rudimentary understanding of the language. However the level of Swedish spoke at this parliamentary level of discussion might be difficult for anyone to understand and get the nuances if you haven't been speaking Swedish all your life.

I applaud him for wanting to pay attention to the proceedings. It would be very easy for him just to sit there, nodding his head now and then, pretending. Swedish is not the easiest language to learn. Casual conversation is one thing, official statements at a government meeting is something else.

I am with the group that can't see the sense in making this comment. He is engaged in the proceedings. Needing a translation does not mean he is not able to speak Swedish. As stated above, this is not going to be conversational Swedish.

    7. Anon at 17:16 and how are your skills in foreign languages? I f.ex. have learned 10 years German and 5 years Italian and English but to understand the language used by the government requires much more skill.
Chris is interested in what is being said and that's what matters.
They are all dressed appropriately for the occasion. I miss Sofia, but her children come first and that is admirable.

I missed seeing Sofia there. Does anyone know why? Is she still on a maternity leave from royal duties? Sorry, it may not be called that in Sweden or in Europe. I am not from that region.

Yes a decently long maternity leave is the norm in Sweden. Very healthy for mum and baby!

Maternity l leave in Sweden is 480 days and 90 of those are mandatory parental leave.

Jolie robe pour Victoria (j'aime les robes à pois). C'est étonnant qu'elle n'ait pas de chapeau. La tenue de la reine est très élégante, très belle robe bicolore et superbe tissu ! Les franges de la veste me plaisent moins. Paloma.

Victoria has not worn a hat to this event for years - it's the same for Sofia and Madeleine. Victoria's preference is a hair adornment above her bun - we can just see the edge of the black bow in photos 2 and 3.
Even though I know it will never happen, I would love to see her (and all the other next generation royal ladies in Europe) wearing hats more often. Lyra

      @ Lyra
The royal ladies who are wearing hats regularly Queen Maxima and Queen Mathilde receive bad comments on this blog when they are wearing a hat during a state visit for example. They have been made so ridiculous on many occasions that they are wearing less hats since the last 2 years. In The Netherlands and in Belgium it has always been the custom that the queen and princesses on formal occassions like the national day, rememberence ceremonies, state visits, funerals, weddings, etc... are wearing a hat.

Strange hat/band on the princess, to me something worn for a funeral. However nice vintage vibe.

The dress code for this event is black plus white. I agree that Madeleine has inadvertently brought a funereal vibe by not including white somewhere in her ensemble. Lyra

I am afraid Lyra is right. For years CP Victoria wore a white jacket on a black dress or skirt. Or she wore a black jacket and choosed white for her accessories like a white ornament in her hair. Also Queen Silvia is always wearing these two colors for the opening of the parliamentory year. Unless it has been adapted from this year on, the black & white colors didn't change.

The Queen looks superb. Simply wonderful. An 82 years old lady shows us how to be elegant in flat shoes. And: she just ignores the New Length for skirts and dresses and wears the length that is best for her. - Victoria is very pretty too!

As said before, the Queen looks stunning. Black and white is such a great choice . Please don't let trends and local designers get in the way of wearing what is most becoming and flattering to you, the individual. Princess Madeleine is my top pick, especially the cute headbang. She's gorgeous from head to toe. As for Sophia, she has FOUR (4) kids. Give her a break while she prioritizes family - good for her!

My question was not to attack Sofia. I am well aware of how many children she has. I was simply wondering if she was sick, out of town etc. I do think a long maternity leave is very good and wondered if that was the case in Sweden. There was no need to "give her a break." Perhaps you should not jump to conclusions about a person's motives.
