On August 15, 2025, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, accompanied by Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, presided over the opening of the exhibition “Chud Thai: From Royal Court to National Style” at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles, Ratsadakorn-Phiphatt Hall, in the Grand Palace, Bangkok. Princess Maha Chakri is the second daughter of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit, and the younger sister of King Vajiralongkorn.
The exhibition, “Chud Thai: Dressing the Nation in Heritage”, celebrates the late Queen Sirikit’s efforts to preserve and promote traditional Thai dress, showcasing the history and evolution of royal-inspired Thai costumes. It aims to educate the public and tourists on the significance of Thai attire, fostering appreciation and inspiring the continuation of Thai cultural traditions.
The Ministry of Culture has officially submitted Chud Thai, the traditional Thai costume, as an intangible cultural heritage item for consideration by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), with the proposal scheduled for review in 2026. These designs became known as “Chud Thai Phra Ratcha Niyom” (royally endorsed Thai costumes), which remain the foundation of traditional Thai women’s dress today.

ReplyDeleteShe is a highly educated and accomplished woman and it’s very interesting to read about her life. Several years ago she broke both ankles. How it happened is a bit of a mystery but I’m sure that the injury accounts for her sturdy footwear here. Her outfit, no doubt made from beautiful Thai silk, looks very good on her.
