Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako Host Tea Party for TICAD9 Participants
On August 22, 2025, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan hosted a tea party at the Imperial Palace for the heads of state and their spouses attending the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9). Initiated by the Government of Japan in 1993, TICAD has been co-hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, and the African Union Commission. Also in attendance were Crown Prince Fumihito, Crown Princess Kiko, Princess Aiko, Princess Kako, Princess Hanako of Hitachi, Princess Nobuko of Mikasa, Princess Akiko of Mikasa, Princess Yōko of Mikasa, and Princess Hisako of Takamado.
It's great to see some international fashion that is a departure from the usual western angle. The kimono on Empress Masako is very impressive. One can only imagine the workmanship that went into it's design and creation. This garment is one of kind and a piece of art. Both the front and back have what looks like some symbolic embellishments. The other Japanese & African outfits are also very interesting. It's nice to see these two very different cultures coming together.
