King Frederik and Queen Mary are on a two-day state visit to Finland at the invitation of President Alexander Stubb. They hosted a return reception at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, attended by Finland's President Alexander Stubb and his wife, Suzanne Innes-Stubb. King Frederik delivered a short welcome speech, and the event featured musical performances by the Copenhagen Boys' Choir and the Finnish boys' choir Cantores Minores.
At the reception, Denmark’s ambassador to Finland, Jakob Nymann-Lindegren, and the accompanying ministers were also present. Finlandia Hall is an iconic building designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.

ردحذفI think Mary’s makeup is heavy, yes, but that it’s lovely for a formal evening where there’ll be plenty of photographers and she’s the star of the show and under a lot of observation. During these last few days I’ve become very impressed by the fashion choices of the President’s wife - she dresses beautifully.

حذفI like this pantsuit a lot, the styling is fantastic. The skintone in her face seems too yellow today, as it is during this whole trip. Normally it's more natural, more pink tones. Maybe someone else than usual is doing her make-up. I do like the rest of her make-up for this occasion.

While she looks splendid, even with the evening make-up, and she attempts to snazz up the look with metallic shoes and clutch, the suit has a day-time vibe to it, maybe because of the vest where a sparkly contrasting-color top would have worked better IMO.

ردحذفBoth ladies look good. Mrs. Finnland's dress is an example for how important light is, without proper light it is a bit dull, always a problem with photos. I love trouser suits with a vest worn as a top under the jacket, we saw Letizia wear one (not the first time) the other day. It makes a simple and very elegant, clean neckline with the jacket. Mary has strong makeup, needed probably because of the colour of her trouser suit.

I don't love what she is wearing. She could have made it more formal by wearing sequined top instead of the vest, for example, and I really dislike the style of her shoes. I also think the suit is too baggy. A pair of pleated trousers and a double-breasted jacket worn open is too much volume on top and bottom. I would have liked it better if one piece was more fitted.
حذفThe Finnish first lady, Suzanne, doesn't look like she is wearing anything on her face, though I am sure she is. Her makeup doesn't hold up to harsher artificial lighting. She looks washed out. Natural sunlight and artificial lighting make colors appear differently. It is commonly understood that women wear more makeup in the evening. If you only compare their faces, not looking at their clothing, it is obvious that Mary is dressed for a formal evening event, while the first lady's face could be made up for a picnic. We wear makeup the way we chose what to wear. It depends on the occasion. It is your choice if you don't want to wear more makeup in the evening or for more formal events, but it is not wrong when others do.
Suzanne Innes-Stubb dress has a suble glow, beautiful. I think this is made of silk which has this characteristic. She has an excellent taste and dresses immaculate and more playful than Mary.

This suit, to me, has so much potential but is just too big for her.. the trousers are so baggy they don’t look like wide trousers they just look too big. Same with the jacket. Interesting that imo a couple of First Ladies who are not royal and therefore don’t have the same access to cash for clothes or more importantly jewels have outshone her. Come on Mary - we love you, we know you can do better! LRB

It is a funny comment - even if I disagree that she’s wearing too much makeup. I’m a Mary fan but you can’t say “Mary’s fans don’t get it” because we are all different. On the other hand, if you say something here that could be hurtful to the person you’re writing about if she reads it, people will point it out to you. It’s fine to have different opinions, let’s just stay kind - to one another, and to the people we’re writing about. It makes this space a nice one to visit often!

I think both ladies are dressed perfectly. Mary is the perfect hostess - elegant, but not outshining her guests, and the First Lady is the perfect guest - dressed beautifully to honour her hosts. Same goes for the men. These two couples display their social decorum very well.

It goes back to the same thing--a certain ignorance about makeup or fashion. Most people don't attend these kinds of functions, so they have probably never been exposed to this type of makeup. Instead of becoming educated on the subject, they criticize.

To comment on an outfit does not convey anything of hate. “Hate” is a very strong word and as none of us here know her (in all likelihood!) none can hate her, and we certainly don’t. She’s a fabulously interesting person and for the most part comments on her are extremely positive … but if sometimes the comments on trouser width or mascara are “not my taste”, it has nothing to do with hate.

Sad to say I am unimpressed by her showing. Heavy makeup doesn’t compensate her uninspired choice of a daytime outfit for this occasion. She rarely is inappropriate in her outfits, but I guess everyone has missteps.
