Agree with you. From the waist up, I would say Queen Maxima at her very best. Unfortunately the skirt let’s down the rest of the outfit. It’s too wide, too long and too shapeless

Bless her heart, Former Queen Beatrix was saddled with a flying plate hat. Much too odd looking. Not a fan of mixing gold/silver necklaces. Her smile, simply marvelous.
Maxima, hair in tow/control, over did the makeup, with wrinkled outfit, and with gloves, which were not needed at this occasion. Queen B, did not have gloves.

Hey, Edwina--Princess Beatrix has been known to wear this style of hat for years. They look like flying plates, flying saucers, or upside down salad bowls. But, her charm and marvelous smile always make the hats sort of fade away.

They all look good and well dressed for the occasion. I feel the somewhat shorter hair suits the king very well

Jacket, hat and pearls are great. I don´t like the big side pleats on the skirt. A-line or several smaller would have been better for this stiff material.

She is not the only royal wearing gloves. At least hers are adapted to her clothes and the seasons, which cannot be said from other royal ladies wearing gloves even inside.

I love Maxima's outfit, with the mild exception of the skirt which to me looks to be too flared and not suitable for the stiff looking fabric. Those pleats on either side also look a bit odd. A narrower pencil style skirt would be preferable to me. But that aside, her jacket (the cut, shape and the collar) is fab, and her hair and hat just beautiful.
Princess Beatrice also looks good in her signature suit and hat style as well as the deep indigo colour.

Queen Maxima is wearing the same outfit she wore last summer upon arrival for a state visit to Belgium. Only the hat is different. I always have the impression that Queen Maxima's clothes are not well looked after. This ensemble looked better when it was new. Princess Beatrix looks lovely, her make-up however is not done very well. She is wearing one of her old typical hats.

Max looks fab! Minor quibble: skirt is a tad too voluminous and stiff, a bit bridal. Queen Bea is in her usual "uniform", I'm okay with the pantsuit, and I'm not surprised she stuck with her hockey puck hat shape, but I still don't understand why when she could look so much better with a more flattering hat style. Is it supposed to be reminiscent of the Middle Ages? S.M.

If you wish to make her full name shorter, you should call her Trix and not Bea because Trix is the abbreviation her parents used for her. But normally for us civilians she must be called Beatrix. The public didn't call Queen Elizabeth Lilly Beth either. She was called Lilly Beth by her family and maybe some friends.

    2. Ms. Anonymous @ 11:36, since we're all 'friends' here I'm being casual. If I were speaking to a royal person, they would be addressed properly. Pretty sure the protocol police won't be coming after me. ;)

Do you know why Princess (former Queen) Beatrix had created these hats for her in the past ? When she was still a young queen one day she looked for a hat style that she could put on and take off again without having to worry about her hair. Her hair was combed higher on her head than now. Since then she always wore those hats. It became her trade mark. I think she will not buy new hats now that she is a princess again and that she only shows up occasionally like for this award ceremony. We also see her more often without a hat lately.

@ Scarlett. She has been wearing high heels since I know her as the fiancée of then Prince Willem Alexander. Why all of a sudden she cannot even wear high heels according to you. What would you suggest her to wear then ?. It is not because Queen Letizia must wear kitten or shorter heels because she has problems with (one of ?) her feet, that Queen Maxima must do the same. Besides when QM wears comfortable sandals or loafers, she receives bad comments too. Her ankles are looking normal like always.

Heavy make up, voluminous wrinkled skirt. At least her hat covers most of her hair. A mess. Even her smile seems forced. But great pearl necklace.

Princess Beatrix wearing a hat from the old days when she wore a skirt , but still very much “ the Queen”.
Maxima, dressed up like a Queen, but sorry, this is really ill fitting: the jacket ( neckline and shoulders too wide) as well as the skirt: an abundance of crinkled silk (?)

Maxima looks great. I like the skirt, to my eyes, it’s not too wide at all. And her make-up suits her naturally dark complexion and dark eyes very well.

I agree with other commenters that Maxima’s skirt is too wide. She looks somewhat overdressed compared to the others in the group picture. I do not like the shape of Beatrix’s hat, especially with a pantsuit.

I love Queen Maxima's look from the waist up--the skirt is terrible. But, this skirt could be tailored to make the skirt look as chic as the rest of the outfit. She looks wonderful today--her pearls are gorgeous and I love, love, love her pillbox hat. Princess Beatrix looks wonderful--and I love seeing her wearing one of her huge, flying saucer hats. Her brooch is beautiful--I'd love to know more about it.
