On March 16, The Duchess of Edinburgh visited the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment at Thiepval Barracks in Lisburn, on the occasion of Saint Patrick's Day. This was The Duchess’ first visit to the 2nd Battalion as Colonel-in-Chief of the Regiment since being handed the role in August. The Royal Irish Regiment is the only Irish Infantry Regiment in the British Army.

Like always too long too wide skirt. That salad on the same shoulder were the bow is and than the hat which is not matching the rest. All this does not help to create an elegant look. Very unattractive to me.

I have a completely opposite opinion. Very attractive to me. Sophie's coat fits so well that I don't mind the length of the coat. If the coat was 20 centimeters shorter, it would be amazing, but even so Sophie looks good. The hat suits her very well. Sophie looks great and appropriate for the occasion. This is how I always imagined a true English lady.

What do you mean by "you are admittedly on the constant lookout" ?
I do not understand this. Could you explain it to me ?
When Queen Maxima and GD Maria Teresa wear dresses or tops with an ornament on the shoulder they receive bad comments too. But on them no problem everybody can say what they want. When a member of the BRF is wearing something similar one may not give any reaction on the contrary one must say that it is beautiful even if it is not.
Sorry but at least I am honest, if I don't like something I say it. I often like Duchess Sophie's outfits and when they are lovely I write it here too. But now I cannot like anything that she is wearing.
What is the difference if I give you a false nickname ? If you ask to forbid all the anonymous there will be not much comments left.

    7. Anon 7 40, not sure if you are aware that Duchess Sophie is wearing shamrocks for St Patrick's day, as opposed to a brooch of choice? If you look at photos of the Princess of Wales in previous years or the Queen Mother if you want to go further back, you will see them wearing shamrocks. The Princess normally gives Shamrocks to the guards who wear them on their caps. She became their honorary Colonel in 2022 after Prince William became Prince of Wales and move to being Colonel of the Welsh Guards. The Prince wore the uniform of the Irish guards at his wedding in 2011

  16. To those who share similar opinions as Anon 7:40 - the obvious symbolism of Sophie`s outfit has been lost on you. She is wearing a feminine alternative to the `great coat` worn by the army, the `salad` is a bunch of shamrock which is given on St. Patrick`s Day (she is presenting them to the soldiers!) and her hat mirrors the camouflage uniform worn by the soldier assisting her. A very well thought out and thoughtful outfit. She looks elegant. No doubt some who have criticised her would also praise Maxima for her over the top hats and outfits with the caveat of (`.well that is Maxima!) Well, this is Sophie.

      @Azalea.
I am well aware of this tradition on St. Patrick's Day, but if she new that a bunch of shamrock was going to be attach on her shoulder, she could have chosen a coat without a bow on the same spot. There is a big difference between camouflage outfit of a European soldier and a hat with a jungle print (tiger or leopard or another wild animal). Besides I don't understand the need to wear khaki or army green for a Duchess or a Princess). It isn't even the same color as the uniforms of the battalion she is visiting.
I am not someone who praise Queen Maxima (or anyone who is wearing something I don't like) just because it is Maxima.

    2. Anonymous17/3/24 21:11

@Anon 14:21 Khaki and "army green", as you call it, are not colors owned by the militaries of the world. We are all free to wear them. Even royalty. I like her coat, except for the length of course. An animal print traditionally pairs very nicely with olive tones. I think she has chosen well. As for the style of the hat, I cannot say. I prefer it over those large brim style hats with plumes and fake flowers or fascinators (non Brit here). You mention the color of the coat not being the same as the uniforms, as though it is a bad thing. Her coat should not be the same color! She is not there in some Cosplay capacity, but in an official capacity. I also don't expect her to have a wardrobe of green coats like Kate does, which is in excess of 20, I have read. Sophie's choices will be more limited. It hardly makes a difference that the shamrocks were pinned at the bow. The one thing that I think is amiss is the snakeskin bag with the leopard hat. One animal is enough. Otherwise, lovely!

It is a pity you can't take a person's personality into account when looking at their outfit. It is part of the package. Maxima makes things work in a way that someone like Sophie never can because of her big personality.

Thx. for the explanation anonymous 17/3 21:11
But all your effort didn't help. I still don't like what Duchess Sophie is wearing here. Like I said in my reactions to other comments on this blog when Duchess Sophie is wearing something that suits her and that I like or that is up to date, I write it too. I don't understand the example of Queen Maxima. Maxima is wearing all sort of styles, sometimes she looks very beautiful and sometimes I think she didn't even look into the mirror before she left the house. Queen Maxima is also much taller than Duchess Sophie which is very important in fashion land. If you are tall it is much easier to find clothes that fits your personality than when you are not that tall. I know it because I am petite myself. There is one important thing that I learned, when you are not a tall woman better not wear midi or even longer dresses, coats or skirts. Usually it ruins the whole look. Too long is too long.

Anonymous@13.55 - read Azaleas comment, she writes in general terms. Look at past photos of British royal ladies who have presented shamrock, their coats are military in style but not the same colour as the regiment. So you don`t like the bow - and I think the soldiers are wearing British uniforms post-Brexit.

Yes whether you like it or not, Duchess Sophie is almost always dressed too long to my taste. I do not have to keep a sartorial eye on the Duchess for that. The pictures are there and I can't look to the other royals on this blog and close my eyes for how Sophie looks. If you think I used a sarcastic tone that's your problem. When I read other negative comments on other royals in general, they are far more sarcastic than I am. But if my comments are irritating you, I suggest you just scroll to the next one.

  30. I think the DoE has a splendid outfit for this event with this particular group of soldiers. I've wanted to see this hat in action again. She wore it to a Christmas service 3 or 4 years ago and I fell in love with the little hit of Mob Wife aesthetic then.

This coat is too long and flared at the hemline to do Sophie any favours. Also the colour is drowning her complexion. I don’t think her high (same as mine, actually) is suited for these big midi coats. It happens occasionally that it’s a bit better, mostly because of better colours or thinner fabrics. But this one is quite uninspired.
