Love seeing Empress Masako and CP Kiko wearing kimono. Wish we could have had a closer look at the details (painted? embroidered?) and the obi.

Most often embroidered with the tiniest silk thread. The obi is special and most often made of even grander material than the kimono, there used to be and still are special obi makers. Mostly not the same pattern as the dress itself. C

  2. I do believe this is the most informal scene I have ever witnessed involving the Japanese Emperor and family! The empress and crown princess are just exquisite in their very fine Kimono - breathtaking...

Both royal ladies look wonderful. It’s a treat to see these sumptuous fabrics. Interesting that neither the Empress nor her sister in law are wearing earrings. I wonder if this is how the kimono is worn? (V.M.)

A formal kimono is never paired with earrings or a necklace. Sometimes a brooch-like object called obi-dome is attached to the obibelt. The Crown Princess seems to have several obi-domes. She appears to be wearing an obi-dome at this reception as well.

There are so many rules and regulations when it comes to kimono. Colour and decorations are determined by the season and then also the level of occasion where black is the most formal. Exquisite silks, embroidery or painting, sumptuous obis. Jewellery is not part of it except hair decorations for unmarried young women-

    3. No accessories and jewellry are worn with kimono - they distract from its beauty and may damage very expensive silk.

Of you belong to a clan the clan mark is most often on the back of the kimono, especially when marrying and so on. A
