Danish Queen Margrethe II decided to abdicate the throne

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary now, King Frederik of Denmark, Queen Mary of Denmark and Crown Prince Christian

On December 31, Queen Margrethe II gave a new year speech for 2024 for the 52nd time this year. The Queen's traditional speech took place at The Queen’s reception room in Christian IX’s Palace at Amalienborg. In her speech, "I have decided that now is the right time. On 14th January, 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I will hand over the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik." said the Queen.

"The support and assistance which I have received throughout the years, have been crucial to the success of my task. It is my hope that the new King and Queen will be met with the same trust and devotion which have fallen to my lot. " she continued. She completed her speech saying "They deserve it! Denmark deserves it!".

  1. That means Fred and Mary will become King and Queen consort. That should be interesting!

    1. The Abdication dress! the last time she wore this dress a few weeks ago, someone commented if she would ever retire, and most of us thought NEVER!

Good for her, to do whats right for her health and country. Now, all eyes on her cousin King Harald of Norway, walking on double clutches and falling on state visits is not a good image.

It is different for King Harald. Yes, he's walking on crutches and could abdicate to CP Haakon, but Mette-Marit can't manage a full-time consort role, she's also seriously ill. There are also no other working royals in Norway, so if the King and Queen retired, Haakon would have to do almost everything by himself.

    3. Haakon could rely for support on their daugther, Ingrid-Al.

King Harald will never abdicate. As he has said it himself -I took and oath to the parliament, and that is for life. The point 12:45 tries to make is just nonsense. When Olav took over he had no Queen, and his son Harald was still taking his military education. So Astrid stepped in until Harald got married. The fact that MM has an illness is not a problem. In Norway, Sweden and Denmark (until yesterday) they don't abdicate. There is no tradition for it. Just like there is not one in England either. So can we please stop this nonsense.

@MaryT Princess Ingrid-Alexandra will be concentrating on education in the coming years, starting with 12months military training in 2024, so she cannot fullfill that role just yet. I'm sure when the time comes both her and her brother will be able to support their father. Also perhaps, in future, Haakon will look at including the children Martha-Louise had with the late Ari Behn.

    2. Wonderful news but it makes me happy and sad.
I’m happy that Queen Margrethe can enjoy a quieter life and profit from her retirement years.
I’m happy that the Danish Kingdom will be handed down to Prince Frederik and Princess Mary. The Danish people will be able to sleep peacefully at night knowing that their Kingdom is in good hands.
I’m sad that Frederik and Mary won’t be able to share, in full, the teenage years of their children.
I’m sad that Denmark is losing such an exceptional Queen.
But here we are in 2024 and ‘c’est la vie’.

I also think she made a wise decision. There is a time of well deserved rest in anybody's life. Especially when health problems related to age are appearing. I wish her all the best for the years to come.

    4. Anonymous2/1/24 07:13

22:00 years ago? In 2019 she said in an intervies on a question about abdication and I quote:-- Not as I can imagine, no, but maybe if I became hopelessly ill. My attitude is to sit for life. The mission is for life. I feel no pressure to change my position. It is a duty that follows the task of following after one's father. You do that as long as you live.

    5. Anonymous5/1/24 18:51

Yes, years ago. As you put it yourself. And as I wrote she went through a huge back operation one year ago, which cost her a lot of pain.

Maybe that’s your attitude but we’re not stuck in the past and old traditions. We have a very modern monarchy and among the Danish population we support her decision and see it as a sign of strength that she take care of herself and enjoy her retirement. You would know if you knew anything about our culture.

I don't mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist, or be negative, but I wanted to mention that in my gut, I feel like the Queen has made this decision now to save both Frederik and Mary's marriage and the monarchy itself. I have always been a big supporter and fan of Fred and Mary, but this recent issue he had in Spain seemed to have "smoke" where there was fire. It really did seem to impact CP Mary, even if only to severely embarrass her. Perhaps not enough to end the marriage, but we have no idea what's going on behind the scenes and a Crown Princess can separate or divorce; a Queen, not so much. And I think we can all admit that Mary is to Fred as Mathilde is to Philippe of Belgium; the glue that holds the monarchy and family together. No Mary = very possibly no monarchy if Fred was to himself and the controversy of a broken family, etc. in egalitarian Denmark where at that point there really would be nothing special about them but bloodline.

On the fashion front, she looks lovely and chose very well for such an important occasion.

We should stop thinking on our own. We should rather try to reflect over why we believed the medias bullshit narrative. Infact you do sound like a conspiracy theorist. Mary and Frederik has gone through the same as Victoria and Daniel went through earlier this year, and Charlene and Albert has gone through for over ten years. Bs with a capital B.

But this is a time to forget about what water has gone under the bridge and what could have happened and concentrate on the positive side of this time in Danish history.

Long live Denmark. Long live King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark.

I think she made the decicion a while ago. Her two sisters are widows like she is. Christian turned 18 a few weeks ago. Maybe she wants to spend time with her sisters. All three of them seem to be close. She is 83 now and knows that not much time will be left for her to do what she wants to do. She reigned for 52 years. That is a very long time. Always on duty.

1/1/24 16:56 You stated "We should stop thinking on our own. We should rather try to reflect over why we believed the medias bullshit narrative." How rude to use swear words, and tell someone to stop thinking on their own. This is a fashion blog, with comments about the lives we see from the 'outside' of the royal families around the world. We as a collective general public, have no clue what goes on within the family home. Everyone in the "collective general public" should refrain from swearing on a fashion blog, and telling other 'collective general public folks' what to think/not think/ then swear at the person. That is normally called bullying.

On the decision of the Queen: It is hers, and hers alone to make the decision to abdicate/step down. A very personal decision, based on many factors, but we as the 'collective general public' have no clue, nor do we need to know, what her personal decisions are, or why. Edwina

  19. Queen Ingrid became Queen Mother of Denmark I believe, I wonder what queen Margrethe's title will now be. I also think Crown Prince Frederick will be a effective King. Queen Margrethe said in the documentary that was about Frederick called "My way" that he did a complete 180 after he met Mary. I am sure she will be very helpful to him as the new Queen. The Spanish socialite has denied that she is having an affair with Frederick and I believe her. I think the rumor is untrue. Lets not taint Frederick and Mary's new role.
