Crown Princess Mary opened the special exhibition "Mary and the Crown Princesses" at Koldinghus. Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Benedikte were also present at the opening ceremony. The exhibition is held on the occasion of the 50th birthday of Crown Princess Mary and paints a portrait of the current crown princess and her four latest predecessors. On Saturday, 5 February 2022, Crown Princess Mary will celebrate her 50th birthday.

The exhibition show the visitors the history of five crown princesses and the Glücksborg dynasty. In addition to The Crown Princess, the principal figures are Christian IX's wife, Princess Louise, as well as the crown princesses Lovisa, Alexandrine and Ingrid, who all four were married into the Glücksborg family and eventually became queens of Denmark.

The exhibition displays a number of objects, each of which tells its part of the story of The Crown Princess and her predecessors. The iconic ruby jewelry set was worn for the first time at Napoleon’s coronation as emperor in 1804 by Désirée, the future Queen of Sweden.

The set came to Denmark in 1869, when her great-grandchild Princess Lovisa was married to the Danish Crown Prince Frederik (VIII). The set was Queen Ingrid’s preferred one for decades, and she bequeathed it to The Crown Prince so that his future wife could wear a set of jewelry worthy of a crown princess.

The two bracelets displayed at the exhibition belonged to Napoleon’s first consort, Joséphine de Beauharnais, and the colored gemstones of the bracelets spell out the names of the empress’ two children from her first marriage. The French initials placed on the gemstones form the names Éugéne and Horténsé.

This includes two characteristic bracelets that Lovisa inherited as crown princess

  1. Lovely coat in a great colour. Princess Mary looks wonderful here. I much prefer these photos to the formal ones issued for her birthday.

I love the mauve colour of Mary's dress. It is the perfect accent to the ruby jewellery on display. I prefer Mary's dress viewed from afar than close-up. The appliqué embellishments on the fabric are distracting up close, but look fine and provide just the right texture in the distant photos like I first viewed on IG.
Mary looks beautiful in all the photos, and nice to see CP Fredrik and of course Princesse Benedikte who looks wonderful as always.

  3. Cette couleur mauve plus soutenue va divinement bien à Mary ; pour ne pas changer, la princesse Benedikte ne me déçoit pas mais il est quand même dommage de ne pas mieux voir le bonnet ou la toque qu'elle porte ?!

I don't like the coat. It looks too tight, too small and the pearls on it make it look cheap. But the color is good.

It is a coat that she has since several years. Good that she is recycling.

The Coat is so pretty and Mary looks great in it, though I have to say from experience, it's very uncomfortable sitting on those buttons. :))

  7. Hello @Ellie. The "hands-on" topic which seems to be entering into this blog has taken a new turn.
Shock, horror. In photo N°6, Prince Frederik has now got his hands in his pockets.
Has he been reading our blog or is it just that he's had the zip repaired in his trousers?

Obviously he reads this blog where the arbiters of things royal reside. Luckily he has us.
Should we take this new development under review? Should we allow him to be this at ease with his wife? Should a member of the upper crust be allowed to put their hands in their pant pockets or should we draw the line at jacket pockets à la Charles? I wonder how long will it take to assemble a quorum . . . this seems urgent. ~d

Hello deadeggs! My thoughts exactly; Fred has his hands in his pockets, so what now?! :) This is definitely an urgent matter! - In The Charles Matter, as it were, I failed to find pics of him with his hands in pant pockets. However, as you said, he frequently has his left hand in the jacket pocket. In The Fred Matter, his hands are in the pants pockets.
First of all, I consider that these guys must put their hands somewhere, as they do not have a handbag, though why not? There are great handbags for men as well. I think that if your average man, or a politician, stood legs wide apart and hands in pant pockets, it would not be considered 'professional' or 'good manners'. But if an upper crust guy such as Fred does it, it's relaxed and perhaps even sexy in a James Bond style. I most certainly won't be shocked either way. However, considering the urgency and delicacy of the matter, I also think a blog quorum will be established pretty soon. - Thank you, deadeggs and d, for bringing this urgent matter to my attention! :) - Ellie

  8. How I wish I could see this exhibit! CP Mary looks very pretty and very happy here. Love her mauve coat and dress--the color is wonderful on her. How nice that CP Frederik and Princess Benedikte could be part of the opening celebration. I hope we will see lots of photos of the exhibit so we can learn more about Denmark's Crown Princesses.

CPM looks beautiful in this lovely dress coat: fit is great and colour suits her well. While I'm generally impressed by the way PB dresses, I'm not this time. The (fur?) coat seems way too big for her build and I can't figure out what kind of hat she's wearing.. a kind of fur(?) headband with some checkered fabric.. somehow it seems off.

MCS your the first person that made a remark about the (fur ?) coat. I was already wondering that nobody said something about the fact that Princess Benedikte was wearing a mink coat. She has it probably since a long time. The hat which is a combination of white mink and a checkered fabric does not match the taupe fur. Sometimes Queen Margrethe also wears real fur during winter. Can (famous) people still wear fur coats in Denmark without being critisized ? There are a lot of countries by now where almost nobody dare to wear fur.

  13. A matching set of jewellery, mostly consisting of a tiara, necklace, bracelet and earrings - sometimes brooches/stomachers, and, perhaps, rings, would also be included - is called a "parure".

I think this is a semi- formal occasion.
Normally protocol does not allow future monarchs to hold hands, while we can see Fred and Mary just making this loving gesture.
In addition, many well- wishers with their flags can be seen in the pics and I guess Frederick was trying to create a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere even putting his hands in his pockets while talking with journalists.
I much appreciate all this, well done!
Princess Benedikte is classy as always.
