The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited Harlem school on the second day of their New York trip. During the visit, the Duchess read her best-selling children's book, The Bench, to a class of second graders. Meghan's debut book tells the story of the special relationship between father and son, as seen through a mother's eyes, and the Duchess has previously revealed that the Duke and her son Archie were the inspiration behind it.

I don't grasp this look, nor the dark ensemble from earlier. It seems she bought the Evenings in Venice Over Winter collection rather than the American Celebrity In NYC collection.

  3. Wow, gorgeous colour on Meghan! Beautiful.
But I don't like big clothes like these, big and bulky. I never like oversized etc. on anyone. But some people can carry it off. I for sure can't ;-)

Mildred and Rosalyn. Oversized clothes are fashion in Europe this winter. Unfortunately not everyone can wear this. Big en very thin woman look best in this style. But if she likes it, she must wear it.... The color is beautiful. Harry on the contrary wears casual pants and polo shirt. He probably found it too hot to wear a suit. Marcy

    2. Hi Marcy, thanks for your comment. I'm a European myself and I know oversized clothing is trendy for a couple of years already. I just don't like it. And you're right: I always think it looks best on tall and slim people. But everyone has their own style and preferences.

Beautiful shade of red that looks great on Meghan. I wish she ditched the coat. It overwhelms her and it wasn't cold in New York yesterday. Her hair looks good. Harry looks relaxed and at ease. I do think think they look like they are dressed for two different occasions.

Her fashion choices are questionable, to say at least. She is trying too hard to be taken seriously and to look like Carolyn Bessette Kennedy but no, these are not the right looks. Also, she is still trying to hide post pregnancy weight.

I think this is a lovely colour for autumn and a nice change from her usual black/ navy/ beige clothes, but trousers, belt, top, jacket AND shoes in the same colour are a bit much.
Also with these warm clothes, she is dressed for cold weather whereas everyone else is dressed for a mild September day, which was apparently the weather was like in New York? I just don't get it.
High-waisted trousers are not for her and she is not tall enough to pull off that jacket, she looks swamped.
Here's how I would fix this: same shoes, they look great! Same trousers but normal rise, cream-coloured blouse - done. No huge jacket!

It can be appropriate for the fall, but not for the actual weather conditions in NYC.
Oversize clothes have been on trend for quite some time now in Europe, so they are nothing new.
Still, they do not suit all body types.

      Delete
    6. Oversized suits aren't the issue here, frankly. Does anyone else have a feeling about seeing a Loro Piana cashmere suit worn to an elementary school engagement where most of these kids are on free/reduced lunches. It isn't an appropriate clothing choice. I don't care who you are, read the room. (And as for the season, it's in the 70's and 80's, not exactly coat season in NYC).

I like this look on her - love the rich red and I like the oversized slightly slouchy look. Probably more comfortable for when she was interacting with the children.

Personally, I prefer her with slightly shorter hair but I think this looks fine.

The only thing I would question is the choice of heavier fabrics for what is still a rather warm time in NYC.

@Rossella and ladarlena Your comments sound classist. Is there a special dress code for Harlem/the "inner city"? Are you implying that it is so ghetto there that Meghan should not be wearing Loro Piana and Cartier for fear she will be mugged or shot? As implied by ladarena, she did not go there to shoot hoops, she went there to read to the children. Playing with the students was not on the agenda, so I fail to see the problem with the brand of clothes she is wearing. We have seen her dress down plenty of times when she is doing physical things. This wasn't one of those days. The children had no difficulty relating to either Harry or Meghan as there were hugs all around. It looks to me as though they are very approachable. Also implied several times by ladarena in a previous post was that they were provided security at tax payer's expense. It is obvious the police/security were for the Governor of the State of New York and the Mayor of New York City. If these allegations had been true, I would think the security would have been extended to this "inner city" neighborhood in Harlem. ~d

Meghan looks like she's about to star in The Real Housewives of Aspen or something. It's ridiculous. It was a warm late summer day in New York and she was reading to disadvantaged children.

The colors are beautiful for fall and she looks great. For such a one-off appearance it served its purpose and she was on to the next event. Meghan as a normally thin person may still be uncomfortable that she is not at her ideal weight, but a good quality coat always adds an edge to a fall outfit. The temperature in NY is not at a constant 75 or 80 all day in the fall. The mornings start of quite cool. Most of the places they visited were near the river where the wind makes it much cooler.
Children are not sophisticated enough to attach price tags to clothing and jewelry. This is an adult construct that indeed reeks of classism. Give them love and attention and they are happy, as the pictures show.

    3. Dear Anonymous 22:14, It is about sensitivity. Don't tie everything with race or class. Also please do not judge just based on a message post. I have worked with economically and socially disadvantaged kids in the past as a volunteer tutor, and know a few things about communicating and working with these kids. If you want to be close to them and let them trust you, you want to dress down to earth. That is how I remember we received the volunteer training. Harry dresses properly on this occasion, so you can see the kids are more comfortable around him. Anyway, please do not be judgmental.

Fashionwise monichromatic outfits are seemingly throw-on-and-go approaches to dressing that look effortless, though they require planning. The best ones are infused with dimension, whether through texture or varying shades, which takes some foresight. However, with a bit of practice, head-to-toe matching ultimately becomes second nature. Rianna

  18. I think the colour is great on her but the big jacket swamps her and makes the whole look messy. In some recent photos of her she seems to be maybe reluctant or trying to hide some post baby weight, which is fine we have nearly all been there, however she has always been about women's rights and loving who you are and what you look like. So lead by example. I will probably be shot down by this thought but I am genuinely concerned about her mental health and maybe it would be better to step back from everything for a while and enjoy life!

The mere suggestion that she shouldn't wear nice clothing is both racist and outrageous, why ? Because she is going to get robbed? Because she should pretend that she is not wealthy? Have you ever seen any royal not wear brand clothing when they visit those that aren't rich?

I don't care about her choices, I'm commenting on her clothes, which often don't fit the occasion.
Once, when she was still a working royal, she appeared in a summer dress and strappy shoes to visit an elderly home in Britain during winter. There have been many occasions where she has worn cocktail dresses and evening coats, evening jewellery during daytime. She simply doesn't know what fits the occasion, which has got nothing to do with her race and certainly not the children's!!
You do not go to visit disadvantaged children wearing Jimmy Choo, Cartier and Loro Piana. That is a truly classless and disgusting display of wealth.

Why would she get robbed there or anywhere? She's got plenty of security. Dress for the occasion is the point. You're visiting a school, not Fashion Week.

It seems obvious the first person to throw under the bus is the Queen. Of course we don't know how much her custom clothes cost, but they are pricey to be sure. We then have the matching hats for each dress and coat. She is always in a coat. Doesn't she pay attention to the weather? We must not forget her shoes, which are not cheap. Then the cherry on top, her jewelry, which she never goes without. It is priceless. Hardly for day wear! The Queen dresses the same for a meeting with foreign dignitaries as she does for a meeting with trash collectors and children. It is obvious she should be in coveralls and boots to meet with trash collectors and joggers and sneakers when visiting a school. She is not making an effort to dress for the occasion at all times, is she? She is not conforming to these rules. Isn't she the go-to person for all that is appropriate when comes to royal behavior?

Children do not know and do not care how much a person's clothes cost. They just experienced the thrill of a lifetime. These royals, yes they are still technically royals though not acting in that capacity, are hands on. They do not stand off to the side and observe, they get down to their level, they touch, they hug. That is what children respond to. Meghan wears Diana's Cartier tank watch and a Cartier Love bangle. Both are very simple in appearance. I think it is very touching that she wears Diana's watch, which must mean the world to Harry. It is not to flaunt wealth, it has sentimental value. Love bangles are screwed on and not meant to be removed. Several royals have them. Mary wears one constantly, yet no one says anything about hers. While we are calling people out, we should probably call out the teachers/administrators at the school. They were in dresses and heels. According to these so-called "rules", they were not appropriately dressed for a school or to be around 8-year-old children. The bottom line is that Meghan can do nothing right to those that don't like her. The comments are insane, and are obviously bias. ~d

She must be too hot in that ensemble, given how everyone (including children) around her is dressed.

Obviously inspired by Michelle Obama's inauguration outfit. Very appropriate for an inauguration in winter, not appropriate for a visit to Harlem in September. Michelle Obama knows what to wear where, maybe Meghan shouldn't just take inspiration from her outfits but also look at the occasions on which she wore them.
On a separate note, Michelle Obama is tall enough to pull this off, Meghan is not.

Maxima has appeared in clothes at schools and elsewhere that didn't suit the occasion, yes. She doesn't always know what suits the occasion either. It's also not always about disadvantaged people.
For instance I remember Maxima recently appearing in her huge, extravagant Ascot hat to visit the German parliament. Catherine and Mathilde I haven't noticed wearing things that didn't suit the occasion, except for what Catherine wore to visit Auschwitz. In my opinion it would have been appropriate to wear mourning clothes there. I can't remember anything else for Catherine and nothing for Mathilde.
My comment is not racist or classist. Please look at what Michelle Obama has worn on similar occasions, certainly she hasn't been done up like that for visits with disadvantaged children.
The point is not that you cannot wear nice clothes to visit disadvantaged people. But if you have the right sensitivities, you don't show off extreme wealth, as in around 10.000 dollars worth of clothes and jewellery to people who are struggling. It's not that they don't deserve you looking your best, go ahead and look good, but showing off that much money in front of them is tasteless. That is not classist, quite the opposite, it shows awareness that 'ot everyone is as fortunate as you and it's inconsiderate to rub their faces in it.
