Queen Sonja lighted the first candle in the Advent wreath at the Royal Palace. The Queen shared a related photo and a message on her website. In her message, the Queen says: "As we begin what will be a different way to celebrate the Advent this year, I believe it is important for us to share light and hope with each other. Today, we light the first candle in the Advent wreath here at the Palace. It is my hope that these special weeks leading up to Christmas will fill us all with joy and good cheer."

    As a previous commentor stated, the Queen always looks so well groomed and beautiful. Maxima, take note. No huge hats indoors, not leather skirts, large jewelry, mustardly colored outfits, just plain elegance, well groomed (includes the hair) and beautiful.

      But Queen Maxima is Queen Maxima with all her lumps and bumps, figuratively speaking.
      And she is adorable just like Queen Sonja.

      I think that each queen of them has her own personality , age , style , character and culture . And both of them is beautiful on her own way.

    The candles should not be red. They should be three purple and one pink to denote the season of Advent.

      When I looked it up, the opinions were all over the place. Some sources say red, white, or a combination of the two, while some say all purple. Then not all use a wreath, opting for a more modern candle holder.

      Four purple, red or white candles are used in Norway, but purple is more traditionally.

      @Anon 9:13 We switch to four white on Christmas Day. I am Catholic. It just depends where you are, I guess.
