Queen Elizabeth formally opened a new session of UK Parliament

Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by The Prince of Wales, opened a new session of Parliament this morning, in a ceremony known as the State Opening of Parliament. The State Opening brings together all three parts of Parliament: the House of Commons, the House of Lords, and the Monarch. The Queen's duties include opening each new session of Parliament, granting Royal Assent to legislation, and approving Orders and Proclamations through the Privy Council.

    1. Agree about Charles (and about the Queen as well), that formal morning dress looks impeccable compared to his normal shapeless and wrinkly suits. He even appears to wear a white slip under his black waistcoat.

  4. I like this green-bluish coat very much. It shows nicely how the addition of a small feature (in this case the elegant little slant of the button line at the top (sorry, I don't speak "fashion English")) elevates the coat into the realm of quiet elegance. I also like that the coat opens up when the Queen is sitting, presenting a dress that offers a perfect colour harmony with the coat. Nice! And Her Majesty forgot her lipstick :-)

    1. She has on a paler pink lipstick, check other photos that are close up, you can see it clearly. :)

  5. I am in awe of Queen Elizabeth's dedication to her duties as queen. I read elsewhere that she read the "Queen's Speech" with a hoarse, raspy voice. She's a trooper! She looked lovely in her mint green hat and coat. And, of course, her brooch, The Cullinan V, was a magnificent accessory. I was struck by Prince Charles' attention to his mother, making sure she was safely in place in front of the throne before he released her hand. He looked very dapper.

  10. J'aime beaucoup la couleur chapeau/manteau ; la reine aurait-elle minci mais cela est peut-être dû au style de sa tenue !

  11. A big break from tradition apparently... she came in car, not coach/carriage, and in nice dress, not long, ornate dress. Interesting!

    1. Yes -- I think this is the second year for this more austere approach? I miss the formal gowns. (And as I recall, the Prince of Wales' consort and the Princess Royal used to appear at the State opening of Parliament as well?) Not sure why the decision was made to downgrade the sartorial splendor.

    2. Obviously don't know the background of all posters but this is the second Queen's Speech within the space of two months. Think she was quite right to refuse to go through with the whole ceremonial a second time. It was also within her usual Christmas planning time of the bug family lunch followed by her departure to Sandringham which had to be put back a day. Bet she was more fed up than she showed. her outfit is a lovely colour and suits her well--quite spring like in the depths of winter. She is a star.
