The Royal Variety Performance takes place every year in aid of the Royal Variety Charity, formerly the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund, either in London or in a theatre around the United Kingdom. The Queen is patron of the charity. The revenue gained at the show is used for hundreds of entertainers throughout the UK, who need help because of old age, ill-health, or hard times.

  1. Totally gorgeous! Catherine shows that you can wear a dress with a lower neckline and still look classy and elegant.

  2. Qu'elle est éblouissante dans cette toilette très féminine ; superbes créoles florales "Erdem" J'aime beaucoup la couleur de sa chevelure !!!

  3. Ugh - why those earrings - if I had access to the Royal Jewels I would be wearing them whenever I could. This dress screams for some dazzling earrings or a simple diamond collier necklace. Sigh. Love the dress though. I feel like Kate ruins some of her outfits with some of her jewelry choices though. DMP

    1. Thought the same about earrings - why, for God's sake? Dress is not bad, but it is busy, so simple diamond or some rubies, emeralds would have been so much better. They shared photo of the Queen dressed to the nines together with tiara and she wears costume Erdem earrings, it just makes me sad.

    2. Absolutely agree about the earrings. These just look cheap. The dress is OK but the lace placement is definitely unfortunate. Not quite a fail for Kate but she can do so much better.

  4. Not discounting she is always a very lovely looking person, this is not an ideal dress. The embroidery placement is regretful and awkward. Linings with lace overlays can be tricky usually she handles them so well. I imagine custom McQueen is thousands of pounds too. Pass for me. Her earrings and makeup and poise are very nice.

  5. Not an ideal dress. Embroidery placement is awkward and unfortunate. Surprised because she usually does well with her lined lace evening dresses. this is a miss. Her makeup jewelry and poise are fine.

  6. Wow , she looks stunning. They both look just perfect.

  7. I think this may be one of those looks to which people react either very positively, or very negatively. At any rate, it comes across to me as a rather graceless attempt to look sexy. I'm relieved, though, to see that the backing beneath the lace isn't a nude color (as it appears in some other photos), but a dull off-white. I love Catherine, but for me this gown is a particularly disappointing fail.

  8. Oh Kate is a beautiful lady and the dress is perfect.

  9. The gown is well made and undoubtedly expensive but it is uninspired and does nothing for the Duchess. The nude lining makes it look like a floor length negligee.

    1. You are right about the dress , it is something wrong with that dress . To me it is not really elegant dress .
Kate has too much hair to look good in curly style.

    2. Which is what I thought as well: a kind of negligee.

  10. I don´t like the dress. The colour is drab, the design makes me think of gothic and negligee and the same time, and I don´t even know how that´s possible. A lace overlay needs to be well cut and exactly aligned with the fabric underneath; I really don´t like this kind of floaty lace with excessive fabric. And lace on a nude colour lining is a very bad concept anyway. To make matters worse, the way the pattern was arranged in the bodice is highly unfortunate, because of the dot-in-a-circle kind of image it creates on her breasts (I cannot unsee that), and because the pattern is strangely repeated right underneath in the skirt. It just looks weird.
So, the only thing I can like here is the silhouette as it creates a very light effect and floats nicely as she moves. The shape as such is flattering, if only it had been in any solid fabric and in an actual colour.

  11. The only thing I like about the dress is silhouette. the pattern and fabric is just too lingerie-ish. I wished she rewears a black lace gown by DVF a few years ago. It was elegant nda suits her better.

  12. I like the black bands at her waist and the neckline but this dress is very similar to her other black lace gown. I think I would have preferred the gown if it was in a different color.

  13. Totally agree.
I'm embarrassed to see this dress…

  14. The top is not bad, the extra black lace fabric at the bottom of the dress is an unfortunate decision from the designer. Surprisingly poor design from McQueen. Never liked how black (or any other dark colour) lace looks over a beige lining underneath it. At minimum the two layers should match the cut and the way they fall.

The rather unfortunate choice of dress aside, I like the hair style, it is more festive and makes Kate youthful. Given that significantly open neckline, I would have chosen a necklace to complement the dress and not statement earrings that get hidden behind the hair curls. Makeup seems (finally) a bit lighter than the usual double black eyeliner. I think this one suits her very well. / LA

  15. This is a very beautiful dress. The lace detailing is exquisite and it fits perfectly. The neckline is so classic and regal. Her hair is perfect. What a great look for this engagement.

  16. I like the dress -- very elegant. You can find little things to criticize about it, but all in all it is an exquisite choice which is at its optimum with Kate's tall and slender figure. I can't say the same about the earrings. She could have done better with another choice. And they are by my least favorite designer -- Erdem.

  17. I do not agree with the negative comments above. I think it is a great dress and Kate wearsit with style. It is good she is wearing a more daring outfit. She is usually dressed very prudently.

  19. There is too much everything in this outfit. The dress is overly detailed, massive, curly hair and big earrings - this look messy. -Siri

  20. The earrings compete with the dress (and vice versa) and there is no winner. Big colourful earrings and black lace - how could she? Both are floral, but that does not help, on the contrary. The pattern on the bodice - like Vanessa said, one cannot unsee or oversee them, just too suggestive. Her hair is divine and the very feminine cut of the dress suits her very well.

  21. On her body every dress is A wow, and So is this.
The neckline and the back are gorgeous as is the lace.
Her hair could better be pulled up to See this.
The earrings are definitive A bad choice: someting white is needed to lighten things up.

  23. PERFECTION. Though - some bold colour on the lips would have been really nicer.. than a neutral colour.

  24. This is a very beautiful dress, but for some reason I am not sure I like it. As someone points out; the pattern of the lace is a bit strange and I do not like the slight puff arms. I love the earrings, but not necessarily with this dress. And well done not wearing a necklace, that would really destroy the line of the dress. Overall ok, but not one of my favourites (that is still the blue Jenny Packham she wore a few years ago when she was pregnant).

  25. I like the overall shape of this dress, but there is something about the dress I don't quite like, and I don't know what.maybe it is the fact that it seems to have three distinct parts - the arms, the body and the border.

  26. Not completely sold on the dress, but the low back of it is magnificent. The earrings are not going well with the dress and I, too, wonder why she didn't choose to wear something dazzling from the royal jewel box for this occasion. Perhaps The Queen had misplaced the key to it and searching took too long...

  27. Spectacularly beautiful dress. Perfectly executed. Gorgeous lace lined in white so as not to appear skin color. The placing of the lace on the top carefully avoids the breasts as the circles are on the sides. Of course she chose well in not wearing a necklace as that would’ve competed with the neckline. I concur: Perfection!

  28. The original post I made seems to have been lost. I find this dresses neckline unflattering to Catherine, the underskirt is a terrible color, leaving it look tacky, rather than something one would wear in public. Her hair is beautiful, and so very shiny.... JT

This gown is a rare miss for me. Another lace dress, similar theme to what the Duchess has wore before. It would have been lovely to see something different and away from all the lace. The earrings are not a good match for the gown. Diamond dazzlers from the great selection the Duchess has access to would have looked much better, this choice is inferior and costume, sometimes that can work, but not in this case. The fit and flow of the gown on movement is perfect.

  30. An evening gown appearance is always good but quite disappointed with this dress. Firstly, like Anon 3:31, I'm not a huge fan of dark lace over lighter lining. It would be very sombre if all dark but I for one would choose that. Secondly, I love the earrings and they were great with the gorgeous dress she wore them with previously but they are not right with this dress--something more formal would have looked better IMO It's still a good look overall--the dress fits beautifully and Catherine can wear almost anything and still look elegant. The low back and the velvet? banding are lovely---it's just not as glam as I was hoping for.

  33. This is not your grandmother's lace, is just gorgeous, love the décolletage and the back is fantastic, perfect silhouette, it jjust screams vintage, and although the earrings may look a little out of place at first glance, once you take a closer look they just add a very retro vibe along with the hairstyle. Love it!!
