King Felipe and Letizia visited the Alicia Alonso Gran Theatre

On the evening of November 12, Queen Letizia and King Felipe attended the opening of an exhibition on the photographic history of Spain and Cuba at the Alicia Alonso Gran Theatre in Havana. The exhibition is called ‘Espana y Cuba: Contigo en la Distancia (Spain and Cuba: With you in the distance)’. There, the King and Queen also attended a dance show called ‘Gala de Danza’ performed in their honor. The Queen wore a red Carolina Herrera dress. Then, the King and Queen attended an official welcoming dinner together with the President of Cuba and his wife at the Revolution Palace.

  1. Queen Letizia is picture perfect...oo-la-la!

  2. Looks like a Speedo bathing suit top. I would rather look at the King.

    1. Funny enough, that’s exactly what I thought. It is not that unusual these days, but I go back to ‘acceptable’ (which I suppose it is) vs appropriate (which I don’t think it is). It’s a choice, but to me it’s not the best choice. Obviously she looks good, but that’s not the issue. We all know that. Does it need to be put on display by a Queen (and not a Hollywood starlet)? I believe the answer is not, it doesn’t’. She can pull it off, but that doesn’t mean she should.

    2. You may think it looks like a Speedo on top but the rest is a gorgeous dress.

    3. But only a Queen Consort and not a reigning Queen as helpfully explained by Quora - good for helping the uninformed formulate fact-based opinions. So obviously she shouldn't be held to as high a standard as the real deal.

She looks great, red is definitely her colour.

    4. Dear Cynthia, Dear LA, I totally agree with you, this dress would be fine in private surroundings, but I find it inappropriate for the Queen of Spain in public.

    5. Dear Gladys, We are all better informed than you think, of course we are perfectly aware that Queen Letizia does not reign, the queen consorts of Sweden and Belgium are in the same predicament, yet they do present high standards, I have never seen Queen Sylvia, for example, put a sartorial foot wrong.

    6. I guess that you have never been photos of the former Queens decolletages all around the world. Queens always have worn that kind of dresses you only needs to see photos, paintings or visit Museums. When did that protocol start?

    7. Dear Virginia

The comment wasn't for you but glad you are fully up-to-date on the situation.

I think she looks great, appropriate, elegant, whatever word one chooses... And consort or reigning Queen I would still think that.

      Others don't - that's fine.

    8. Hahaha. I’ll take it. Fun reply, I’ll give you that! Even for a Queen Consort it’s not like one needs to display (with persistence, I might add) like a tv presenter. In fact these days, even tv presenters get different standards. Clearly not everyone thinks the same, I have no issue with that. On the contrary. It’s interesting and at times fun to read (I’ll say less so when it comes to comments that seem a song of glory and have nothing to do with the outfit itself, or at the opposite end, are just driven by pure hate/prejudice). Keep them coming!

PS. Did you actually click on the Quora link? I did mean it tongue in cheek. LA

    9. Sorry LA but Quora does strange things on my phone which is where I tend to check this site - so I gave it a miss... ;-) But I do know the difference, honest...

When I was in Cuba, fashion seemed relatively casual even when dressed up - and the humidity at this time of year is quite something so that's why I think this outfit works. That and I love her in red - have done since she appeared in the now famous outfit at the Danish royal wedding.

    10. She wore this dress in Mallorca (Spain) this summer at a reception. So it is a repeat as the other ones worn more than three times.
In Spain it is really normal. As someone said Queens always have worn decolletages, they are not nuns. In 2019 it is really odd...I wonder the average age here, it is ridiculous for a young woman as I am.
Also you should look for Queen Victoria Eugenia and her dresses. I also has found Queen Silvia in a dress without back, obviously not lately.

      Information is good, only saying.

    11. I mean, it’s not like Speedo swim suits aren’t covering certain parts of the body. They are cut that way for a reason (which isn’t one for regal events. The questionable part is the wide exposure of the shoulders. The lower part of the dress is in fact very nice. But for someone who’s been in and around swimming pools forever, the neckline is indubitably Speedo-ish. Now I’m making up words, not sure any dictionary would take it.

As I said, many opinions. Interesting read in the Telegraph about dressing age and situation appropriate, but certainly not boring I am interview with Carla Bruni. Don’t know her, but I surprisingly found myself liking her perspective. Needs subscription to read. LA

  3. I think like Debra, the dress is very appropiate.

  4. I can't put my finger on it but there is something off about the proportions of this dress. I don't think I like where it hits the Queen on her calves. Perhaps an ankle strap shoe with a tea length dress isn't the right choice? Her makeup and hair are flawless! DMP

  7. Speedo Bathing suit top, that crossed my mind too. Not a fan of these shoulder-exposing styles.
I do wonder about the Queens fashion choices lately.

  9. Just beautiful. Look in the dictionary next to red and you will find Queen Letizia’s picture! Great style and everything for the event as well, often the result when she is paired with Herrera’s designs. She needs a rose and the King (nice tie but reddish color maybe next time) to take her out dancing- the tango maybe:)

I love this dress, red is definitely her colour. The dress fits well, love the length. Her gold hoop earrings are the perfect choice, subtle but nice. Choice of shoes and clutch, perfect.
