    1. 'Hahaha' @Karen, the moment I read Fabergé in your comment I knew that was what went through my mind when I saw this dress but I couldn't find the word for it. Spot on 👍

P.S. Still don't know if I like it or not. I will have to meditate over that.

    2. Bingo! But the dress suits her.
I don't like her on the 4th picture. She looks exactly like the Metro Goldwyn Mayer lion and completely fake.

  2. I like this! It's both exotic and subdued at the same time, if that's possible. Gorgeous colours.
    She looks radiant.

  3. I would have thought celebrating with ordinary people she would have toned it down a bit - dress wise ??

    1. Do you think the citizens invited to the Palace for dinner would really want to see a "dressed down" queen. I know I'd be disappointed if that was the case.

  6. In the second picture looks like King Willem-Alexander is scratching his head while looking at her dress and he is saying to himself; "What in the world was she thinking".

  7. "Unknown", that's funny and true! Well, the colours are good on Maxima, but somehow it reminds me of antique embroidered curtains with cords or yes-, a'n expensive Faberge egg. And believe it or not: I do have a plaid exactly like hers around her shoulders. Got it for £8,-. Very soft uand cosy for the doggy in his basket. Well, big show and money spending this week-end. Long live the King!

  8. The dress is inspired on the wallpaper of one of the rooms in Palace Huis ten Bosch. https://twitter.com/JohandeHaan3/status/858026332311216128 Credits to modekoninginmaxima.nl

  9. I think it is very nice Máxima chose a very royal dress, and not an understated one. The people she is entertaining are dining with the King and Queen for once in their lives, and they deserve as much a real Queenly attire as a president or other 'high' guest.

    1. 100% agree. This is a gorgeous dress with very fine details, the embroidery in gold thread is a particularly exquisite work. The colours are well matched too.
And Queen Máxima wears it well, she looks extremely lovely.

I don't quite get the whining on Máxima overdressing, especially at an occasion as celebratory as this. I certainly couldn't afford a dress like this (let alone the whole party) but that's nobody's fault, not Máxima's nor anyone else's and my chances to be able to afford it wouldn't approve would Máxima wear a toned down outfit at a cheaper party, so... I hope my point is explained to whom it may concern (and I'm staring at you, Dutchinmigrant!).

If my country had a queen I'd prefer one like Máxima. And I'd prefer magnificent, elegant celebrations like this, yes, even at my (=a taxpayer's) money. Willem-Alexander and Máxima show us how celebrations should be done: they should be memorable, outstanding events. Otherwise it's just like any other day. That's why you dress up your best to a wedding, that's why you put on a better outfit for a big family gathering, to the opera or even the corporate christmas party.

    2. ZL, you are right as for the joy of dressing up for special events. On my wedding I wore a dress that was especially made for me. The taylor was a very skilled one and gave me very good advice (I don't understand much about fashion) and together we choose the perfect silk in the perfect colour for me. Believe me, I looked stunning on my wedding day! The dress was expensive, but that was okay for THAT day. This is why I like looking at photos of beautifully dressed women. ( And men. My hubby was and is a stunner too.)But anyway - I prefer living in a country without monarchy. I am not even sure how long there will be monarchy in Europe.

    3. I am celebrating with you ZL! I would pick a Maxima myself! I think it is a milestone birthday and a party for the country! Go big Maxima!!

  13. I think Maxima had a few too many. Don't care for the dress at all, but she's happy and having fun, and as usual, she needs to be the star. Whose birthday was it anyway, it be nice if she let her husband shine for a change.

    1. How superficial. I've you saw the tv shows you might not say these things at all. She needs to be the star? would you also say that to her if you got the chance to meet her like many people had.

  14. I actually love the dress on her, it is unexpected and totally happy. Only Máxima can get away with it.

  15. Interesting dress, but remember, the Dutch are very design talented, like mixes, not afraid to press the boundaries. It was a special night where 150 citizens were invited to the Papalce! Appreciate no tiara worn. Wonderful night. Gefeliciteerd!

  21. It was a wonderful day! I've also watched an impressive interview on tv with a King in tears while talking about the loss of prince Friso.
I've read some of the comments here that surprised me. Try not to judge on 5 random pictures. If you saw the the tv show for instance you would see that the whole family enjoyed themselves a lot. Maxima wasn't steeling the show, the King gave an interview of 90 minutes and a long and personal speech before the palace dinner. Plenty of attention there. He did very well and is more popular than ever.

    1. Agree with you. They Royal couple look super and the Queen's dress suitable for the occasion. I don't see any wallpaper or curtain details in the dress. It is something different and match the personality of the Queen. Happy Birthday to the King.
