    1. Marit means pearl, it's a nordic form of Margareta (Greek Margarites). Mette means pearl and have strenght in the battle/fight. Mette is a Danish pet name I guess you could call it of Margareta.

  6. I'm from Sweden and as far as i know "Mette" doesn't mean anything. Marit could maybe be Mary. Yes Mette Marit is a traditional Norwegian name.

  7. The name(s)are not traditional Norwegian names, of old norse origins such as Ingrid, Haakon, Olav, Harald and Sverre, but Scandinavian forms of Margrethe and Mathilde. Seperately both names are quite common, but I have never heard of any With the combination Mette-Marit before.

    1. According to a norwegian page online there are 25 (23 before the wedding) that are called Mette-Marit in Norway. Read in a Swedish magazine that maybe she was named after a series of books from the 1950 about a girl called Mette-Marit Tande. Who knows ;)

  8. Marit is not the same as Mary - Mary is an English form of Maria or Mirjam, Marit is a form of Margarita/Margaret/Margrethe, which means that they are TWO DIFFERENT names.
